Time for a new laptop?

Recommended Posts

My current laptop is over 4 years old, and is no longer working (I think it's a fan issue). So I'm thinking it's about time for a new one. I built one on Dell's website, as my last one was a Dell, got beat all to hell, and still lasted 4+ Years. Here's what the specs were and the price:

Intel

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

I would add 4 gigs if you plan on serious gaming on Vista. Then again how good is the 8600GT compared to the new 8800m?

Memory is always easy to add later, like whenever I do actually upgrade to Vista. As for the vid card, that's the highest Dell offers, but it will be good for the casual gaming that I do. I'm not as hardcore as I used to be.

So they finally released the 8800m, I have a 8700m and that sure see's me fine. I'd say for the price, the spec is good, I know a few guys who have 8600m's and have yet to hear any complaints, stay away from the 8400m's though they're absolute trash.

What model do you have?

I bought a Dell Latitude D610

Pentium M 1.7Ghz

1Gig Ram

ATI X300 GPU

80Gig HD 5400rpm

The only thing i regret is getting a smaller screen a 14.5 i think it is. Its kinda old i bought it used online, but it runs great. I can even run Unreal Tournament 2004 without a hiccup. Although i am too lazy to bring out a mouse, and i have a desktop for that anyway. I generally use this for school, internet, and point and click adventure games. I bought this on impulse for $375.

Me?

My current lappy (non operable) specs:

Dell Inspiron 8600 (what's the deal with the lower numbers for newer version? It's MADNESS!)

PentiumM 1.3 Ghz

768M Ram

64M Geforce4 Go

40G hard drive

It also ran UT2k4 flawlessly.

It might have not released yet, but I've read the title hear and there that its been finished. It has the new die shrink just like the 8800gt does. still takes a lot of power though.

I see two problems

1. 80gb hardrive is too small. Even if you have an external USB drive, you will still need enough room for programs and games. Not to mention that you wont always be able to bring your USB hd. I have two 160gb disks in my laptop and thats pretty sweet

2. A 15" monitor with a resolution of 1680x1050 is very bad for your eyesight. I would choose a 17" screen. I switched from a 15" laptop to a 17" a few months ago and it was a huge relief.

DISCLAIMER: Do not take what I write seriously unless it is clearly and in no uncertain terms, declared by me to be meant in a serious and non-humoristic manner. If there is no clear indication, asume the post is written in jest. This notification is meant very seriously and its purpouse is to avoid misunderstandings and the consequences thereof. Furthermore; I can not be held accountable for anything I write on these forums since the idea of taking serious responsability for my unserious actions, is an oxymoron in itself.

Important: as the following sentence contains many naughty words I warn you not to read it under any circumstances; botty, knickers, wee, erogenous zone, psychiatrist, clitoris, stockings, bosom, poetry reading, dentist, fellatio and the department of agriculture.

1. 80GB is plenty for me. My old 40 gig is enough to store any games I'm currently playing, plus any music, video, and pictures I may need.

2. My current laptop is the same resolution with a 15.4'' widescreen, just like the new one. It's never hurt my eyese before.

That's overkill for a laptop, you only need that much space because of what you DO with it. 80gb is fine.

What's a 17'' screen like? I have a 19'' :)

This is a bit prying of me, but what the heck do you have on your PC that takes up 700 Gigs of space? That's a lot of pr0n.

Ahhh see that's where we differ, I educate myself from books(Hate to actually read at length from a computer screen if I can help it), and programming tutorials are generally exceptionally small, :p I suppose some folk may consider MSDN to be large... I wouldn't though, I suppose the basic requirements come to about 10gb, to your 100gb...
