Because it's different is a terrible argument.

Insecure much? :teehee:

I have no idea what you're talking about, doofus. I still think that this idea could make for a great experience, even if the transparent tubes aren't alien made. Maybe they're man made.

Meaning that you are so concerned to quash ANYTHING new. If it were up to you, Obsidian would be writing an RPG based on the first film, using only the dialogue from it (and possibly the second, if only for the classic Hicksisms) and NOTHING else.

Really, open your mind. Allow other ideas. You might be surprised with how good they can be. Otherwise speculation is going to be pretty boring: every new idea we get Cant's impression of Sand "It will be Aliens in name only" diatribe.

... We might as well just lock the forum off and rely on blogs from the devs, rather than have any speculation.

And if we go by your willingness for new things, the Aliens will fly space ships, fire machine guns, and then eventually call us in for tea and a peace treaty at the end.

It's new and dramatic! Depth!

Maybe an Alien can join the PC's party. Make it a Queen so it can serve as a love interest for a male PC.

Strange that you two are going at it when you both seem to like the idea of trasparent tunnels.

Theres nothing wrong with new ideas, but I feel they should work well with the existing setting. If you are going to make an aliens game, it needs to have a few things if its going to stay true to the source, and I just don't see how a transparent hive would make for an interesting experience.

Since aliens often take on the morphology of their host, (see dog alien in Alien 3 compared to 'human' Aliens), I'd like to see some new variations on aliens.

I remember, years ago, they had Dark Horse alien toys and some of them were based on what aliens would look like if they popped out of different hosts. I remember the 'snake aliens' looking rather cool.

meta, you jerk, we agree on the idea of transparent tubes. See, what I was trying to express is that I like the idea of the transparent tubes because I like the idea that happens to be new rather than the new idea because it's something new.

GDM agrees with both of us on one point: "Theres nothing wrong with new ideas..."

He agrees with me on another point "...but I feel they should work well with the existing setting. If you are going to make an aliens game, it needs to have a few things if its going to stay true to the source..."

He disagrees with both of us on a third point. "...and I just don't see how a transparent hive would make for an interesting experience."

Hey, you didn't like my Grue idea, so I don't know why I should call for anything new. I want my ball. I'm going home. :Cant's giving meta a grinning hard time icon:

Hey woah there. I was inspired to open up my mind by roguepl's list of demands. His forest pic in particular. Thisis a novel seting, but one which utilises a different form of scary. I'm not trying to do away with those claustrophobic black hive spaces, sweaty with alien condensation. I'm suggesting that to remain scary, not to mention entertaining, you need to vary things.

I think you'd find yourself cursing consistently through the bowels of a hive, hating the dark, and then climb outside into these transparent tubes and curse the openness even more!

I'd prefer if the hive's uniqueness, as an enviroment and as a game level, should come from non-stop claustrophobia, living walls and the fact that an alien could be anywhere. Of course it is also bloody dark.

To further this uniqueness and a create a contrast, there could be these lush jungles and open city streets and dust bowls, I want the hive to be this place you'd hate to venture in and at the same time be consistent with the setting. I understand that the texture of hive structure and it's "innards" probably has a lot to do with the enviroment it has been formed from, but I think this outlandish, almost wacky, hive design would serve better as a segment of some space station, where you could see walkways all around you and on them aliens would a-skitter and a-loiter.

When I read "transparent tubes", I just guffawed. I mean, what the hell?!

The tubes might be clear 2 the aliens just not to the player. Maybe the nests could have bone yards like in the book Harvest. So so book. But it is a fact of life that anything with Alien in it must have scary dark spaces. :p:):aiee:

Depends on what you're considering claustrophobia and cramped. Are you talking hallways or air ducts. I don't think there's a lot of support for hives being in air ducts, but they do travel through them. A hallway can be claustraphobic too.

Canyons. Great lidless canyons. They can be scary.

Canyons. Great lidless canyons. They can be scary.

A thousand aliens come streaming down the sides of the canyon. You and your father try to climb out of the way, but your uncle shows up and knocks your father down. You blame yourself because all you see is your father rescuing you and you think just only if you hadn't been in that canyon your father would have lived!

It would be heartbreaking.

Later on you meet two survivors from the alien onslaught, a wiry technic and a gluttonous biomechanic and they again show you the will to live.

I think it could work as a narrative, growing up stories and life lessons never get old.

We already know as much about Aliens as we do about Homer Simpson, trying to keep them cloaked in mystary is a pointless excercise. It's simply way too late for that.

We really don't. Unless you count the comics, which the movies don't, so why should anyone else make a point to?

"Show me a man who "plays fair" and I'll show you a very talented cheater."

I think the comics are fair game for the RPG.

The Xenogenesis comics started off explaining how the Xenomorphs are feared and deadly. Followed shortly by "or that's how it used to be, it's the other way around now" and proceeded to show a group of 5 slaughtering entire hives with a toxin that fumes from would cause aliens to immediately die.

I think they went a little far.

I see the cause of your irrational fear of exploring the xenomorphs in greater detail. The ol' slippery slope.

Seems there is little clarity on if/how much the comics will be contributing to the games:

Well Ill start of by saying even this RPG does seem realistic, as long as it does not turn out to be Aliens vs. Predator: Extinction knockoff.

This has already been ruled out by the lead designer, as Obidian don't have the rights to the Predator IP.

we're not making an AvP game, so the Yautja aren't part of "our" universe for practical purposes.

I agree with some people in a sense that the mantra of the original Alien design, to Giger’s work is crucial and that of Stan Winston (Queen Alien). However what everybody forgets about is what really scares an audience; to me it two motives, atmosphere and sound. What do I mean by this well, certain elements like heavy shadows and lighting, constant feel of movement and disorientation on where you are going. Atmosphere was a real lackluster in the third and fourth movie. People could literally walk the script with you and say “and now the Alien pop’s out of here and she will die next.” Here is a good example of good atmosphere: In AvP 1, there was a sequence with a face hugger coming out of an object on a space station and started to swerve and move at you at a fast speed. Finally it would duck behind some other objects as you tried to kill it and made the jump at your face “instant kill.” The same goes with sound, where you lure in the audience thinking it’s coming from area when it’s right in front of you. You want to make them panic for that exit door, and be even cruller by taking it away from them.

Whatever you do though stay away from the Doom 3 clich
