It's probably a ploy by the show staff to get more pay or more staff. Or buns.

Nah, as an American, the most peculiar thing about British television, aside from the numb quality of it, is its unwillingness to milk a series for all its worth like we do here in the States. Some people say the Office was the best comedy show ever and it only ran for 2 seasons.

You have to also bear in mind that UK comedy is usually not written by committee like American stuff is. This makes it more able to express uniue genius, but also less able to run and run. It relies on the inspirationa nd experinece of only a few people.

That said, I won't be surprised if more UK shows are written by larger teams and have longer runs in the future, so that they can more easily be sold to US networks.

I think it's a (justified) naked attempt to extort more cashola by RTD. Dr Who makes $BIG for the BBC, worldwide.

Edit: JNT is John Nathan-Turner, the guy who arguably killed the series before it went off air for 16 years ... Russell T Davies is the dude who brought it back, with a vengeance.

I never really cared for it after it was resurrcted a few years ago. I really did not like it after they shoved Colin Baker out the door back in the 80s either. But it is nothing short of amazing the longevity this franchise has had.

And if it is a cash cow, BBC will not pull the plug on it. They may operate differently from American networks ut they are still in the business of making money.

RTD may have started the new series but he is not needed to continue it. Doctor Who had a lot of producers and writers before him and it can have a lot of producers and writers after. If he wants to move on to other projects instead of getting burnt out then more power to him and I wish him a lot of success.

JNT- John Nathan Turner -hasn't had a hand in Doctor Who for quite a number of years.

Also there is speculation for a new Doctor Who movie, but it deals with the 8th Doctor again. I look forward to that.

Colin Baker's tenure was marred by Nathan-Turner's production ... he had some very extreme scripts (where the Doctor was almost playing a bad guy) and certainly no love from the BBC.

Also, the BBC are funded via a licence fee that is levied on all British citizens who own a tv (read: poll tax), so they are less interested in marketing than they should be. Having said that, I would be astonished if they let this slip through their fingers. The real challenge is finding someone who will invest the same amount of effort (and love) into the franchise as RTD has done.

Colin Baker's Doctor was going through his midlife crisis. I liked the 6th Doctor for it often showed the Doctor's darker nature, and a nice contrast for Peter Davison's pretty boy Doctor.

I quite liked Sylvester McCoy's revist of Patrick Troughton's rendition, too, but I had long since lost touch with the series by that time.

I think a very real issue that plagues long-running series is making each new encounter bigger and betterer than EVERYTHING else that has come before ... sort of what happened to Doctor Who with the Daleks in the nineties.

On the positive side to this news, it sounds like the script has been written to explain

how the time Lords lost the Time War

, and it will be aired in the next 18 months.

They tame black holes to use as power plants. It'll be some sneaky extortion play by the Daleks, whereby if they died, then the whole universe would be destroyed, and the only way to defeat them would be something that caused the Time Lords' doom.
