"The current preview allows you to run a number of examples from the DirectX SDK on Windows XP. They're not the greatest thing since sliced bread, but we want to whet your appetite. We hope to release builds in the coming months progressing from demos to fully functional games."

Microsoft said it was impossible and that Windows Vista was absolutely needed for it. We'll see.

As much as I want it to be true, the project is still very very very young and is far from being production ready. WINE was around since 1993 and it still cannot achieve complete compatibility. On the other hand, Vista-XP compatibility layer should be easier than Windows-*nix.

The whole reason DirectX10 needs Vista is because the entire video OS layer has been redesigned from scratch.

It is perfectly possible, however improbable, to create a Vista-type emulation layer and run it in XP. It would run a lot slower, though, as it would need to be interpreted by the old video OS system in XP.

That would be great, seeing how vista sucks for games currently.

The drivers are getting better all the time; there aren't even any DirectX10 games out yet ... (silly early-adopter ..!)
