Why does it have to be FPS.  ?  FPS is great for FPS games, note the two meanings, but it comes short when you are interacting a lot and staring down the barrel of your gun the whole time.

Why? Talking heads worked in Bloodlines, too.

FPS is for competative gaming and the odd single player experience, inadequate for a fully developed storyline involving lots of 'talking heads' encounters.

An Alien RPG just cries for FPV, not to mention that you get a way better awareness for the surrounding. Of course, isometric-view and turn-based combat could work too (Gorky 17, X-COM), but I don't think this is going to happen.

3-rd person view in an Alien game? You people are nuts!

Well dooh, bloodlines was not first person.

I have no idea why anyone would say that a limited viewport gives you better awareness than a free viewport.

Na na  na na  na na  ...

greg358 from Darksouls 3 PVP is a CHEATER.

That is all.

It was. You could play it in 3rd person, though, but the awful PC animations definitely weren't a plus.

Limited how?

And at any rate, we're not talking about awareness, but about immersion, which is a key factor in any survival horror game.

- When he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast.

Being aware of your surroundings and knowing what you can do with it and what not is key for immersion.

3rd person may work for some Japanese Horror games, but I prefer to lurk around corners in corridors instead of looking at a wobbling ass the whole time.

I think a close third person perspective can work for survival horror.  It sure worked for Resident Evil 4.

I also tend to hold the view that human melee + adult aliens = ur ded.

Aliens move insanely fast..... I can't see that perspective being the best perspective, but it would work just not very well, but first person, top down, isometric BOTH work insanely well for the kinda high speeds that aliens move at. My thoughts are more with action orinated games opposed to traditional RPG's, though it all depends upon real time or turn based mechnics as to what is best and why.

Third person over the shoulder would be a view that would suite most people, but never be amazing.

As for melee, your probably right == DEAD. Though small arms may provide a nice get out clause...

The biggest vulnerability this game has right now, at least in my head, is the combat, as many have stated before. It's going to have to be real-time, and fast. It'd be madness to have a NWN2-esque turn-based system (IT WAS TURN BASED NO DISCUSSION PEOPLE) where everybody waits their turn to attack. No no, it's got to be immediate and hectic.

And as far as melee goes, come on, it's completely out. These things bleed acid, remember? You don't want to be next to them when they die. No GoW style chainsaw death.

*edit - Also, melee weapons would degrade pretty quickly. Best we can hope for is a flamethrower. They're Alien stalwarts as it is.

Erm... If you wanna get technical, every game on the market is turn based.

I've had this arguement before, NWN is real time with pause, everyone takes their turn at the same time so to speak. In a turn based scenario each agents movements happen at independant times.

Any method of play could work, if it's going to be twich it should be more like alien swarm than alien breed. If it's going to be more tactical, more like UFO and JA, somewhere inbetween then it has to be a phased based style of play.

Oh you also earn 1 moron point for your post.

Flamethrowers are a must, but you need a high skill to use them properly, otherwise you might inflict injuries on your own people. Like that crazy gal in Aliens that burned her buddy because Aliens confused them.

Oh btw, remember Gorky 17 (aka Odium)? You also got skills (I don't remember the names anymore) like Luck (special Headshot), or improving your nerves so that you stay calm and don't start getting insane or frightened like a madman when danger approaches.

One thing that would be also cool is to have a scientist/tech on your team who can take probes from the dead aliens, in order to improve your gear for example.

Oh and don't forget hacking, melting, setting up gun turrets and that stuff. And Androids! Preferably female ones!  :aiee:

oooo Odium did ranged melee quite well from what I recall, in a turn based fashion....

Aliens move insanely fast.....

What do you base this on?

I re-watched both Alien and Aliens...they don't move so fast...in fact, they have 2 behaviors:

- When alone, they sneak

- When in group, they swarm

I guess you must base this on something beyond Alien and Aliens.

I dunno what Japanese horror you've been playing, because they certainly don't feature "wobbling asses". :aiee:

I based it upon what I recall seeing from the movies, compared to humans they move fast, that doesn't mean that they also don't have the properties you yourself have mentioned.

Yes, but I respond to a post once i've read it, not the thread as a whole.

Watch Alien and Aliens again, you'll see they don't move that fast.

The little bugger in 3 moved pretty freaking fast... and in rez they weren't slow either. Those two are part of the canon too, regardless of critics.

I think it clogs the thread to make four posts when the same can be achieved with one... but meh. It's not like I can have you change your posting style anyway.

They move faster than humans.

End of discussion really.

Sorry if it's a problem, it really is how I have always made my posts, and we're talking years upon years here...

In the first AvP game, the Aliens were fast und unpredictable, and that certainly made every encounter feeling very stressing and uncomfortable. Don't know how they're going to make encounters in the RPG though....

Not to fans...to fans there are 2 movies only...the rest is donkey poo.

In Alien and Aliens, I don't see them move faster than humans. That's an "invention" of movies 3 and 4.

And I don't think this discussion can be ended.

Its true that in Alien and Aliens, the aliens aren't really fast as such. They tend to take people by surprise because they either blend with their surroundings or drop down from above, either way they are not noticed until its too late. Their actual attack strikes are pretty quick though, making them somewhat unavoidable if you don't notice the alien until the last moment and its gotten close enough to strike.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

*Sigh* There are 4 movies, some people like yourself may choose to ignore the existence of 3 and 4, but I doubt anyone who has an ounce of self respect who was working on something that is part of the alien universe would be able to get away with and ignoring the facts of movies 3 and 4.

The fact you choose to ignore those factors are your own business.... But you cannot expect anyone else to follow you in that school of thought.

So yes this discussion can be ended, because you're selective in what you assume to be part of the universe. It's a pointless discussion to continue with.

Aliens move faster in every movie I have see, though they also employ stealth tactics.

As part of the movies technique to the view they are indeed usually hidden, it's called suspense.

Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, in the first two movies the aliens were actually pretty slow and ponderous. The marines never had problems shooting them as long as they could see them coming. And when Ripley and Newt were in the egg chamber, Ripley had no problems shooting a bunch of them all by herself when they tried to rush her.

I would say they are able to articulate their bodies quickly, but are relatively slow but relentless when actually propelling themselves along.

No offense, I reckon movies 3 and 4 are sad facts of life. I think most fans agree they did not improve the Alien universe.

Hence, since you cannot justify future mistakes using past mistakes, reason commands that only the best of movies 1, 2, 3, 4 be used to further the franchise. It so happens that most of the best contributions are in movies 1 and 2.

OK, this is just my opinion. Some sort of poll would clarify if it is also the general consensus.
