What decent FREE firewalls are out there?

Yes you are.

I had set up a separate account for internet purchases and have a dial-up connection. A few years ago, I had a phone call on a holiday from my bank asking if I'd made a purchase for $1.85 ( or something like that ). I couldn't remember anything like that so I declined it and the bank said that they had received frigging hundreds of charges like that all on the same day. That's why they were calling.

At that point I began layering firewalls. I now sit behind a Linux firewall ( on my gateway computer ), the next stop is a router/switch and then Norton and nVidia firewalls. From there it goes into my dual system which has McAffe and Black Ice Defender as well as nVidia firewalls. I do any money transaction from behind the dual system.

I like my privacy .

So all you need to be safe is a basic firewall, turning off administrative priviliges of your account, following good security practices, and having some common sense.

Bingo! Turn off the admin features is the best thing you can do to prevent bugs from loading themselves and activating them into your system.

If you are not using your system for purchases or storing sensitive data on your system, the worst that can probably happen is that someone will use your rig as a proxy server. It's up to you to decide if that pisses you off or not. Some junior high school kid hiding his porn collection on your system is one thing. Some jerkoff using your system to email spam other systems is another.

I probably shouldn't volunteer too much information, but I've been internet banking and internet purchasing for years.

For the record, I also don't do any P2P sharing of any kind, and don't typically visit websites out of the few that I normally frequent.

I made the mistake of installing XP (after a format) with my network cable plugged in. When I got my firewall and virus scanner up right after that there was already **** on my system. Possibly the attack rate was higher because there's probably lots of trojan attack bots on people's infected systems.

 

I unplugged the cable, did another clean install and got the firewall up before I pluged it in again.

you are playing with fire not running a firewall. you probably get 100 or more back-door attempts to access your system if you are on any type of always-on connection, i.e. cable modem, DSL, etc. when i first got mine, i watched the logs that night. unbelievable.

That's the first thing hubby noticed after we aquired DSL and then cable. We have an expensive hardware firewall, not only for potential personal ID theft but hubby works from home a lot, and so it's kind of a must-have precaution.

 

I used to think a firewall wasn't very important depending on how you use the net and all that...I don't anymore. They won't neccesarily protect you from your own foolishness or 100%, but I'm glad it's there.
