Arkan
They can compete if their plan is not dependent on having market dominance. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yep. Nintendo's not going anywhere. "Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger." - Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials "I have also been slowly coming to the realisation that knowledge and happiness are not necessarily coincident, and quite often mutually exclusive" - meta
mkreku
Besides: Nintendo are dominating a market. The handheld one. They're raking in cash by the boatload off of the Nintendo DS. Hell, even I can actually imagine buying one, once the new DS Lite comes out, if it looks good. The original was just too damn uglee to own. Lancer
The thing is how can Nitendo compete with Sony and Microsoft when those two companies have no problem making a machine that they would lose money to produce and sell. In that sort of market I would stop making consoles and just focus on game making for one or both systems, and then when the video market collapses again be there to pick up the pieces. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Screw Nintendo. SEGA will rise again!!!! Edited February 2, 2006 by Lancer Lancer
Diogo Ribeiro
The thing is how can Nitendo compete with Sony and Microsoft when those two companies have no problem making a machine that they would lose money to produce and sell. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I think Nintendo is doing the more sensible thing. It's been a while since their main consoles have had any sort of market dominance; their throne and Sega's were taken over by the original Playstation. Nintendo knows it can't directly compete with that, so if it can't compete directly with one why should it compete directly with two - Sony and Microsoft? Even with Sony clearly maintaining an advantage, Nintendo doesn't seem like it will budge. They have a safe place in the videogaming industry, and they've been managing to stay relevant than most companies out there. Why risk anything else? Nick_i_am
and that's really the point, Nintendo is the last 'true' videogame company left (in terms of a company that makes its own games and consoles, and nothing but). While Mircrosoft is a computer Software company and Sony is electronics. For this reason, Nintendo will always have to stay one step ahead, and if it weren't for their utter dominance in the handheld market they would probably have gone the way of Saga by now. Hurlshort
They aren't near the Sega situation at all. It's not just because the handhelds, it's because they dominate a certain part of the market. Sony and Microsoft both target a much older crowd. Nintendo has stayed with the younger audience. They don't overspend pursuing a marketshare that is overcrowded.
