I guess one of the problems with some political threads is that they do turn into flame wars. The fact is some people can't express opinions without turning into trolls or flamethrowers whenver someone disagrees with them. That, or things start off nice, but escalate into people throwing rocks at each other. Remember the human sexuality thread? That turned nice real fast. "

I've always thought it was kind of pathetic and silly when people do the "my election is important too, look at me" stuff. Not that metadigital was trying to do that specifically, but it smelled of that to me. Great, I know other elections are important for their own reasons, but seriously............there is a reason everyone talked about the US election and no one is talking about the German election now.

 

I assure you it's not because we lack knowledge about the election, it's just because it's not that interest to that many people. Sure it's important to some degree, which varies from person to person, but that doesn't mean it's interesting to very many people. And truth be told, it IS less important than the US election. Not because we're better people, it's because the coutry is a military and economic power house. If you can't see that...

Also, I was less trying to support other democratic processes and more highlighting the arrogance of your post, in that you just assumed that everyone wanted to talk about the US presidential elections: that was all there was to politics.

 

I should think even you would be interested in the Iraqi constitution that was due to be voted in this week (and has been postponed).

 

There is more to politics, even for a US citizen, than just elephants and donkeys.

Ehrmm, I was going to comment about the Americans reading books-snap, but then I realised my standing is somewhere in the middle of "don't care" and "politics are dumb". So...yeah.

 

Anyway, debates turning into flame wars is natural, and good even. This kind of nonflammble stagnation of the forum just makes it worse when it happens. People get offended and insulted for no reason at all. We should argue/debate more.

Yep, I never said I didn't follow things at all (after all I AM following the German election to a degree). I do very much follow along with Iraq and Afganistan. etc etc. But when people demand I pay attention to such and such election, it usually tells me it's not worth paying attention too.

 

There is more to politics, even for a US citizen, than just elephants and donkeys.

 

There is, but lets face it, many of our states are more economically and culturally relevant than most countries. It's not like Sweden is equal, in terms of world impact, to the US. I'm sure I could argue that some of our state goverments are just as sophisticated as some goverments. You think it's silly that we don't pay more attention to other elections, but we got ALOT going on over here.
