Games with stats aren't necessarily RPGs, but I do agree that a CRPG needs stat-based gameplay. Otherwise it often falls into categories like Adventure game and whatnot.

Well, Paper Mario was an RPG, yet from what I understand the only stats in it were things like HP and MP, things you'd find in any adventure game.

In Paper Mario you have HP, FP, Attack Str, Def, and a few other stats. It has been a while since I played it, a few years actually. But you wear badges that improve attack and defense. I also think you have normal attack, and magical attack.

What about its predecessor, then? I'm looking at Super Mario RPG: legend of the Seven Stars right now, and the only stats it has are HP, FP, Attack, Defence, Mg.Attack and Mg.Defence. In Zelda, hearts are equivalent to HP, your magic meter equivalent to FP, the strength of your sword equivalent to Attack, the strength of your tunic equivalent to defence and magic defence, and the power of whatever spell you happen to have roughly equivalent to magic attack.

EDIT: I didn't mean a particular one, Mus, as I haven't played either. I looked over several reviews and walkthroughs and didn't see any mention of stats like strength. Luckily, our good friend Ender has set us straight on that matter.

If I remeber correctly the newer one didn't have stats. But I doubt it.

 

 

Slightly ot here; the latest mario rpg even had a stat called "stache"

All games, to some degree, could be called an RPG. All other arguments are moot, and every other point could be argued as being nothing but opinion. It comes down to your particular definition, and nobody elses.
