Aegis
It does have a lot in common with Taoism, actually, in the whole force flowing through everything and you just play along etc. (grossly simplified, I know, but I have no intention to discuss Taoism at 2:30AM so you'll have to excuse me). FaramirK
Well, sadly, I think your poll missed out the two religions Lucas borrowed most heavily from, Zen Buddism and Scientology. Â Zen Buddism because they believe heavily in Asceticism (Almost no belongings), Meditation, Will fight as a last resort, mystical and detached from everyday life, celibecy, belief that there is a spiritual force inherent in all things. Â I believe whole-heartedly that Lucas got the idea of the FOrce from Scientology. THey believe that every living creature are posessed by microscopic creatures called Thetans, who can empower us, guide us etc and are neutral on the moral scale. If you read most of the Scientology stuff, you could just replace "Thetan" with "THe Force", and it would all sound like it came out of an EU novel. Â Jedi are like forcing Zen Monks to live in a world controlled by the thetans. Â So I vote Zen/Scientology, and not any of the poll choices. Von Manstein
Voted metaphysics, because, although it isn't actually a belief but a word describing the extra-physical, the beliefs of the Jedi are so vague and broad that it seems fitting to give their system an equally vague and broad word. Â I don't know about that Scientology thing, though. At least, not in the original three movies before that midichlorian garbage was thrown at us. In the first three films, it was all about the metaphysical; in the prequels, it was about the physical manifestation of the force in midichlorians. *Shudder*
Aegis
Strictly speaking, any religion in the traditional sense involves metaphysics. Not much help there.

Aegis
Eh, it'd be more accurate to say that metaphysics is anything that isn't real (by scientific standards). Â Edit: Actually, I take that back. It's kinda hard to explain (especially at 3AM). Metaphysics is an attempt to explain what is real but what we can't perceive, as such. Magic, for example, is metaphysics as it cannot be explained with scientific terms under the reality as we perceive it.

FaramirK
Metaphysics means in broad terms , whats really real, right? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Â It is meta = beyond, physics = physics. Basically science can't prove anything beyond what it can observe in a laboratory, and fails to explain the finer points of hunamity's humanity (sorry Materialist Scientists of the world), Metaphysics deals in the Philosophy of ideas outside of science's reach. Â Its not so much a belief system as an Academic discipline.

Von Manstein
Metaphysics just means beyond the physical. Every religion is metaphysical, but not all metaphysics are religious. I voted that way because I can see no real, single source for Lucas's Jedi beliefs, so I just lumped them into the very vague column titled "Metaphysics". The UK has recently recognized Jedi Knight as a bonafide religion in a recent census poll. The Way of Jedi transcends the science fiction series of Star Wars. It encompasses many of the same truths and realizations of the major world religions, including Zen Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, Catholicism, and Shinto and is both a healing art and a meditative journey that the aspirant can take to improve every aspect of their life. Light is a major part of the Light Side of the Force as used by those serious in improving their cognitive and emotional balance and well- being. According to scientists, the entire universe is constructed of molecules, cells and electrons. Within the core of the atom is the presence of light, in a perpetual state of flux, This is an integral part of the Force in the physical universe. Yet the Force as we know it is a spiritual energy that surrounds and permeates the universe - in through and around it - and it is to this end that this site was created: to build the Jedi Knight Movement and its sound foundation stone upon stone, and to practice the path of Jedi for generations to come..... WITHTEETH
The whole medicholerine beleif reminds me of the string theory. the unification theory. that everything is made of one thing. string theory is of tiny tiny strings that make up EVERYthing in our universe even the empty spaces. they vibrate, and together they play like an orchestra. after the big bang they clustered and formed the planets and the bigger the more gravity. thats a vague discription. Darth Flatus
Ok by the way jedi is NOT an officially recognised religon here in the UK. However in the 2001 census out of over 52m ppl, around 300000 put their religion down as Jedi in the mistaken belief that it would get official govt recognition.
