Oerwinde Posted February 6, 2005 Posted February 6, 2005 So I've been looking for a widescreen version of Johnny Mnemonic for a while now. Yes I know most people think its bad, but anyway all I can find is fullscreen. Who in their right mind only makes a fullscreen version of a DVD? Who in their right mind BUYS fullscreen DVDs? Would you buy half a poster? A CD of only clips of songs? The other day I rented a movie that was labelled widescreen, only to find a fullscreen disc when I got home. Now this could have been avoided if fullscreen DVDs just no longer existed. Now some people say "well my TV is too small to see widescreen" Well then don't bother with DVDs then, because the sound and picture quality improvements on DVD aren't noticable on a tv that small. Some people say "Well I don't like the black bars" Stop watching movies. Seriously. Stop. If you can't appreciate seeing the whole movie without bitching about the area around the movie, just stop watching, you don't deserve to watch. Anyway, enough of my elitist rant. Go on with your lives. The area between the balls and the butt is a hotbed of terrorist activity.
Mars Posted February 6, 2005 Posted February 6, 2005 imo i hate the crappy little letterboxes. VHS fullscreen kicks arse. I dont get whats so good about letrbox it cuts out more that 50% of the frigging picture!!!!! anyway why look for a keanu reeves movie, they all stink.
Laozi Posted February 6, 2005 Posted February 6, 2005 anyway why look for a keanu reeves movie, they all stink. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I hope to god that Constantine doesn't People laugh when I say that I think a jellyfish is one of the most beautiful things in the world. You can see that in fact you lose almost half the picture in the fullscreen version. Edit: just noticed you said VHS kicks ass... sarcasm noted. And Johnny Mnemonic was cool. Especially Dolph Lundgren "HALT SINNERS!" The area between the balls and the butt is a hotbed of terrorist activity.
Mars Posted February 6, 2005 Posted February 6, 2005 heh i havent actuly seen jonny memnonic or whatever so ill have to rent it. I know it doesnt cut anything out but scientifically proven fact the pciture is smaller to look at. constantine actually looks okay. except that keanu has the acting range of a baked potato.

They have the only treatment for it. Well Johnny is hired to bring some data to certain people, but he doesn't have enough space in his head, so he has to get to the people before his brain dies from overload, and people are chasing him trying to kill him because of whats in his head. Killer priest, dolphin hacker, and Ice T. Nothing could be better. And yeah, Constantine looks good, too bad they didn't go for Paul Bettany for John Constantine though. The area between the balls and the butt is a hotbed of terrorist activity.
Phosphor Posted February 6, 2005 Posted February 6, 2005 I really liked Johnny Mnemonic. It was a good cyberpunk film; certainly elaborated upon from Gibson's short story, but then the story in itself wouldn't make much of a movie. Anyways, on widescreen DVD: http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000...8731335-8806429 PS - Completely agree with Bettany as John Constantine. That would have been excellent.
Volourn Posted February 6, 2005 Posted February 6, 2005 I prefer fullscreen to widescreen. Widescreen looks retarded. DWARVES IN PROJECT ETERNITY = VOLOURN HAS PLEDGED $250.
Kaftan Barlast Posted February 6, 2005 Posted February 6, 2005 I know a guy who actually said something along the line of "Why do they have those black bars? Why cant we see the whole picture?" he wasnt exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer.. I tried to explain but he just didnt get it Fullscreen really stinks, especially when they do edit in annoying forced horizontal pan to show things happening by the edges but whats worst is locked aspect ratio widescreen films that are only watchable on a 16:9 TV because otherwise everything gets compressed long the horisontal DISCLAIMER: Do not take what I write seriously unless it is clearly and in no uncertain terms, declared by me to be meant in a serious and non-humoristic manner. Its almost painful to watch. With those kind you can usually change your DVD player settings to make it view in 16:9. Same with Letterbox versions on widescreen TVs. Just change your DVD player settings to... I think standard is 4:3. Anyway, heres a guy who's better at making his point than me. www.widescreen.org The area between the balls and the butt is a hotbed of terrorist activity.
Laozi Posted February 6, 2005 Posted February 6, 2005 You forgot Henry Rollins is in Johnny Mnemonic too. And if James Caviezel hadn't been in "The Passion" I would have thought him perfect in Constantine. I really liked him in The Thin Red Line, in my mind the best "war" movie of all-time People laugh when I say that I think a jellyfish is one of the most beautiful things in the world. LordRaven Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 I hate when DVD's do not state if it is widescreen or not on the front and you have to spend ten minutes exploring the plethura of crap on the back. What is anamorphic widescreen. I bought the grudge wich is in anamorphic wide screen. I have a 46 inch sony and the movie still fills the screen.

What is anamorphic widescreen. I bought the grudge wich is in anamorphic wide screen. Letterbox is widescreen meant for fullscreen TVs, while Anamorphic is widescreen made for widescreen TVs. On a fullscreen TV anamorphic widescreen tends to stretch upwards and downwards to fill the screen, unless you switch either your DVD player or TV to 16:9 mode. On widescreen TVs, it just fits fine. And yeah, I hate that too. Though even that doesn't help some people. My roommate bought Die Another Day at Wal-Mart(Who tries their best to make sure you buy fullscreen DVDs) and just grabbed one of the ones on display. They had widescreen, but they were off in the back and you had to look for them, while the fullscreen ones were up front. It says fullscreen right on the front in big letters, but he grabbed it anyway, figuring they would put the superior version on display. Gets home and "AWW CRAP" Because if you try to return it, they'll only exchange it for another fullscreen version. The area between the balls and the butt is a hotbed of terrorist activity.
Kaftan Barlast Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 But this DVD bussiness seem a litte outdated now, I have digital cable and they air all films in glorious HDTV resolution so my DVDs appear grainy and less fluid in comparison. My personal preference is Blu-ray since it costs the same as HD-DVD and holds almost twice as much. Then again, I could just buy a Playstation 3 and an HD-DVD player and be able to play both.... PS, this just in, Fullscreen has now been dubbed "Yokelvision" The area between the balls and the butt is a hotbed of terrorist activity.
