I have the option of adding bluetooth to my laptop for 35 pounds. this can only be put in in the factory so it is crucial that i make the right decision. What the hell is bluetooth? what can i use it for?

Never heard of it before. Perhaps its a dentistry option. >_<"

Bluetooth is a wireless network technology, most commonly used in mobile phones and PDA's. There's a few other peripherals that use it (like keyboards, webcams and mouse's) but it's not essential for your survival >_<

So what exactly does this technology do? Does it simply make wireless access to networks faster? If thats allit does, then youre right, i probably wont need it.

Basically it is a whole seperate type of wireless connectivity.

It can be lots of fun becasue alot of companies have it switched on without knowing it, so all you have to do to get access to their network is park your car outside their office and switch on your laptop.

Many moons ago, Bluetooth was supposed to be THE wireless standard. Everything in the universe was going to be Bluetooth, except that it was buggy, expensive, and few people actually picked up the standard.

If you currently own Bluetooth devices (a cell phone, PDA, keyboard, etc) and want to support them wirelessly on your notebook, then go for it. If you do not own any Bluetooth devices, then you probably don't need Bluetooth support.

If I want to transfer pictures from my cellphone to my laptop, then I do I need bluetooth, or just an infrared port?

Depends on your cellphone.

I'm not trying to be vague, really.

I think you are confused with WiFi.

Bluetooth is a wireless standard.

Bluetooth is a wireless standard.

Yeah, but bluetooth only works up to like 10 metres or something, it's not like you can park your car outside a company and use their network from outside with bluetooth.

ps: Or were you responding to someone else?

I wasn't aware of bluetooth's range. You may be right.

I looked it up for you  . And Roshan, you may find this interesting too, it contains a lot of general information about bluetooth.

Harold "Bluetooth" Gormson (935 - 986) was a danish king who was responsible for making Denmark a Christian nation ..

that's the truth all the others are lying! he's the original bluetooth .. ;)

Fortune favors the bald.

Wouldn't surprise me, since Bluetooth was actually being created by the Scandinavians ;)

I just saw a bluetooth enabled USB pen drive on sale with a range of 100 meters.
