I have played Rorona, Totori, Meruru and Aescha. I own every released afterwards, but had no time to playe them yet. It is kind of challenging and the quality of every title is different, but I have mostly liked what I have played. Not everyone like the jRPG mechanics behind it. Anyway, Lulua is 4th game in the Arland series, so if you are able to spent more money, few months ago was released remaster of first three games in the series (Rorona DX, Totori DX and Meruru DX (in that order)) which I can really recommend to you as well. You will get to know more about the lore and background of characters.

I would prefer to buy only Lulua, since game's perceived cost & cost & time consuming nature of previous jrpgs in arland series.

Well, if you are not completionist, previous Arland titles are possible to finish in around 20 -25 hours or so. With walkthrough even faster. But yes the DX versions are pretty expensive at the moment. But as soon as they go on sale, they will be worth it ;)

I am completionist. But I use walkthroughts extensively for my playthroughts, so...

So it could be around 50-80 hours on title, depending how you plan to move forward :)

I'm interested about getting into Atelier too. Can someone please tell me:

How's the gameplay? Similar to old Final Fantasy titles, or is this another action RPG crap? Similar to any other game?

How cheesy is the story and characters? Is this the standard where a female character spends the whole game abusing the male hero verbally and physically despite having hidden feelings for him, which of course she won't admit because baka? Or is it something worth checking out?

Turn Based Combat, no smash button crap like FFXV. Story is in between cheesy and serious, more to the cheesy side, and depending on title. In the titles, which I've played, there was no male abuse. But there is some sexual innuendo going around some NPCs at some point in every game. One of the NPCs in Arland Trilogy is called Esty Dee for a reason 😛 I think the game is more for female audiences, but me as 40 years old cis-gendered privileged white male, was able to enjoy most of the games from the series, despite Brie Larsons oppinion, that I should stick only to dude-bro targeted entertainment 😛
