I am just about to finish the final quest However from what I understand once i finish the main quest the game will not let me return to the world map. With this in mind should i wait to finish until the new expanision DLC is out and uoloaded? Or will the new expanision change the fact that you are not allow to go back to the main map?

It almost certainly won't change it and you should just keep a pre-endgame save.

Obsidian won't likely have post ending dlc, so Kaine is right.  But you can just save before Ondra's Mortar and reload that when the DLC is out.  The point of no return has an hour or two of content after, so you won't lose a ton of progress. :)

The game makes a SPECIFIC save before you cross the point of no return. It will be called PRE-ENDGAME. You can always fall back on that.
