I'm confused about chant speed and the subclasses and how they work together.

With Troubadour with BR on, you chant faster, but you get the extra phrase penalty on invocations. That +1 penalty seemingly wouldn't be as relatively a big deal when you're trying to get to high-level invocations, but for low-level invocations, it's a 33% penalty!  So wouldn't you leave it off until you get to high enough levels for it to be a net benefit?

On the other hand, if the Chanter's job in the party is to pump out low-level invocations (like, say At the Sound of His Voice), you'd want to have BR off all the time.  But if that's the Chanter's job, wouldn't you have gone Skald to get the -1 chant bonus for offensive invocations?

So the subclass preferences would go like this:

-For a summoning/general offensive Chanter, you'd go Troubadour, but leave the BR off until you get to at least Level IV invocations.

-For a buffbot/healer, you'd go Troubadour & leave BR off all the time.  Or maybe you'd just go vanilla Chanter to keep the phrase linger.

-For a paralysis-pumping debuffbot, go Skald.

Do I have this right?

BR useful if you want to pump out invocations faster while off you can have two phases effects active since they have decent linger time aslong as your intelligence is 20.

So INT affects linger duration as opposed to the chant's duration or both?

That makes high INT + Brisk Recitation very convenient.

BR doesn't affect invocation costs, being a Troubadour does. At low levels you might as well always have BR on because you only know one chant anyway. Later on you turn it on whenever you feel accumulating phrases is more important than buffing your party. Also some phrases, like the absorb one, actually work better with BR.

Int affects linger only. It has no interaction at all with BR since BR removes linger :)

-For a buffbot/healer, you'd go Troubadour & leave BR off all the time.

It's very satisfying to do at least. A troub with 20 int will have 100% uptime on two chants.

This thread gave me an idea now:

- Multiclassed troubadour

- Dump int

- BR always on

- Spam one chant, perhaps the absorb one

- Get invocations that don't scale with int, like Seven Nights

- Nuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuke

No, because a troubadour has bonus linger duration :)

A chant lasts 6 seconds. The linger lasts 3 seconds. Troubadours have 50% longer linger, so 4.5 seconds. 20 int is 50% increase, which is applied to the base 3 sec, so another +1.5 which makes it 6. Any other chanter kit, vanilla chanter included, would need 40 int to do it.

(I can't swear on every mechanic I've posted in this thread but it works out roughly like that at least)

OK, I think I get it.

  • Med/High level Troub with BR off beats vanilla because of linger
  • Med/High level Troub with BR on is good for when need to invoke supersedes need to buff because invocation malus matters less by then
  • Low level Troub with BR on is also good because BR mitigates invocation malus
  • Low level Troub with BR off is the only one that somewhat sucks, but since you're just repeating "Come, Come," it doesn't matter; you always leave it on.

Consider me converted to Troubadour fanboydom.  (Though I'd still go Skald for melee/offensive invocation only Chanters.)

I like this idea, but why limit yourself to "Her Courage"?

Because that one is actually better with BR. Every 3 sec you get a new absorb, which is great if you're under pressure and the absorb keeps getting used fast. You can do it with whatever chant you like though. I was just overcome by the idea of an int dumping chanter and wanted to share it with the world ^^

Dump int as a chanter and your summons last like 10 seconds and your AOE cones and auras have 1 range.

In other words: INT is super- duper important for all chanter classes.
