Pathfinder CRPG by Obsidian?
Gromnir replied to Jigawatts's topic in Pathfinder Adventures: General Discussion (No Spoilers!)
anything beyond the card game is hypothetical. HA! Good Fun! It is mentioned as long term with multiple projects both in the press release and by Pazio's CEO. which means absolutely nothing. honest. we don't know anything about the future projects and any deal can be renegotiated at any time. serious folks, other than the card game, there is nothing to see at this time. hell, how many games has bis/obsidian actual contributed serious man-hours to that eventual got cancelled? more than a couple. for folks to get excited about hypothetical future games we has Zero details about is striking us as a bit silly. *shrug* is a card game with the possibility o' complete unspecified projects down the road? huzzah? be excited if you will, but let's not blow this news out o' proportion. HA! Good Fun! -

am actually not knowing many pathfinder fanatics that would be interested in a card game, but clearly there is enough. we joked about the possibility o' the project being nothing more than a smart phone app, but it seems that our mocking were closer to the truth than we hoped. d&d d20 were actual a very good system. sure, the game eventually got too big for itself with literal hundreds o' splat book prestige classes, feats and spells, but the core system were excellent. and yeah, stuff like the ranger class and harm spell needed to be balanced, and bab were a flawed thac0 wannabee from d&d, but 'tween levels 4 and 12, d&d d20 were a relative intuitive and well designed system that allowed for a great deal o' dm freedom. when d&d abandoned d20 and went to 4.0, there were, understandably, more than a few folks who wished for a more familiar incarnation o' d&d. so, paizo created pathfinder and many o' the d&d refugees were overjoyed at the results. not only were the core rules more coherent and balanced than d&d 3.5 (and why wouldn't they be as there had been so much time to perfect d20,) but the adventure paths were frequent superior to wotc offerings. rise o' the runelords, with the possible exception o' the final module, were excellent and thoroughly fulfilling. more than a few o' the adventure paths has been at least as good as runelords if not better. reign of winter, for example, is the best commercial adventure we has played in years. on the negative side, much as d&d began to collapse under its own weight, so too has pathfinder. there is simply too much. the more rules and feats and classes you add to a game, the more difficult it is to retain coherence and balance. with each new book, pathfinder becomes more in need o' a serious overhaul. paizo boards is awash with optimized builds and discussions o' rules exploits. a large % o' folks is gaming the game, and that is not healthy. that being said, d20 were excellent. many gamers realized that d20 were excellent. that is why pathfinder has been so well received, making it the mostest popular pnp system. obsidian making a pathfinder game strikes us as a good idea. on the other hand, obsidian making an electronic card game is meh. am doubting most pathfinder players actual care 'bout this news, but as we noted above, there must be enough folks to make this a reasonable project... which just goes to show how many pathfinder fans there is. still, the actual news is... meh. HA! Good Fun! -
just one thing, 'cause the trash man stuff had hit a dead end and nobody but him were arguing his particular brand o' silliness. "3. Teenagers die, Israel goes full offensive and does everything towards genocide. Read the definition of what genocide is, and you'll see that Israel has taken all the steps but one, the finalization of it." http://www.hcs.harvard.edu/~hireview/content.php?type=article&issue=spring01/&name=myth genocide? what complete and utter nonsense. first, there has never been a freaking palestinian state, ethnicity or culture. the brits arbitrarily drew some lines on a map and sudden arabs living west o' the jordan rift valley is magically transformed into Palestinians? oh, and that is a myth too. even in 1948 the UN were still calling the arabs in palestine, arbas. why? 'cause egypt and jordan were ruling in gaza and west bank respectively. the arabs had rejected the two-state solution proposed by the UN in 1947. so, it weren't til 1967 that you get UN AND arabs talking about the notion o' Palestine and palestinians. the palestinians don't have a distinct language. is no distinct religion or art or mythology or folk lore. palestinians has never actual had a nation so is not a distinct nationality and palestinian arabs clear not qualify as a distinct ethnicity or culture. regardless, in 1946/47 you had ~1.8 million arabs living in so-called Palestine. in 2013, thanks in part to the fact that the other arab nations has never granted citizenship to the UN defined plaestinian refugees, we gots 11.3 million palestinians worldwide. the israeli's genocidal campaign has resulted in a significant increase in palestinians? heck, in gaza, the rate o' population increase is 3.5%. even if there is an identifiable "palestinians" that could be the target o' genocide, their numbers has increased quite substantially during the israeli's imagined campaign o' extermination. condemn the israelis for their actions, but use emotionally charged and inappropriate terminology is not helpful or accurate. conditions in gaza is bad. some blame that on hamas as much as israel, but is clear that israel deserves some responsibility. is plenty o' criticisms one can direct at israel regarding the living conditions o' arabs within the boarders o' gaza and the west bank. but call genocide is wrong. HA! Good Fun!

actually, the west could very well swing in and change the whole thing with a "bribe." if the west offers a better deal, it ain't a bribe in the grown-up world o' economics and power politics. only a year? works both ways, no? and again, russia is getting sanctions and were already entering a recession. is awful timing, which makes all the more curious. am guessing putin felt like he had to show he were all manly and tough-- hit the westerners back with sanctions o' his own. *shrug* perhaps this is a situation in whcih perception o' russians is more important than reality. and yeah, we has seen the list... that were our point earlier. scroll up and review. russia is imposing food bans on the diversified and service based economies o' the west. maybe putin really wanna turn the screws and he bans imports o' rubber vomit and whoopie cushions. HA! Good Fun!

http://atlas.cid.harvard.edu/ we didn't post by accident. most western european nations is service economies, meaning that imports v. exports is less significant to euros than for nations such as middle-east oil economies, china, or russia. even so, take a look at any o' the nations affected by the russian import ban and and observe the % o' imports that is foodstuffs. now consider the % o' US chicken production that actually goes to russia. is a fraction o' a fraction. US food producers is yawning with indifference. on the other hand, poles send a goodly portion o' their apples to russia, 50% in fact. if you grow apples in poland, you will be hurt by food ban. even so, .3% o' poland's exports is apples and is not as if those russian allocated polish apples will just rot. new customers will be found, even if at diminished values. poland, lithuania and denmark appear to be amongst the potentially hardest hit, and this is hardly looking like a crippling blow to any o' them. zor thinks this is euros shooting themselves in the foot? he may be correct, but if so, is shooting last digit on smallest toe on left foot. http://www.themoscowtimes.com/opinion/article/russia-s-food-ban-is-high-risk-low-reward/504912.html is just an opinion piece, but makes some interesting observations. russians is spending a far greater % o' their income on food than does westerners, so small increases in food costs disproportionate harm them. sanctions disproportionate harm the russians and a food ban also affects them-- is a double whammy. oh, and russia were just entering a recession even before sanctions and food ban. http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/08/12/russia-economy-idUSL6N0QI25E20140812 also, it may be cynical o' us, but we suspect that right now western nations is making deals with brazil and other food producers to convince them to limit exports to russia. one year o' food exports to russia will get brazil... what? is not as if brazil will sudden double food production. if brazil is selling their food exports to russia, then former brazillian customers is gonna be available to the euros.oh, and how much can russia pay for brazilian food before it has same effect o' crippling russian economy? western nations is in a position to offer brazil a better deal to simple not sell food to russia. as we seen, the only export russia really has is oil. western nations can offer long-term incentives for Capital goods. ironic maybe, but china might actually be russias' best option for a short-term food supplier as we suspect the western nations has least influence with china. am not saying food ban won't hurt in the west, but it appears that the food ban will hurt russians far more. couple with already existing sanctions... *shrug* is not gonna destroy russia or anything, but is gonna sting something fierce. HA! Good Fun!

we loathe the barbarian icon because o' the ridiculous sword. on the paizo boards we commented that the thing were insane and we got slammed by the majority... looked like a perfect reasonable bastard sword to most folks. paizo did eventual make it a Large bastard sword, but even so, one wonders how something that looks like the lawnmower blade for King Kong's john deere rider could function as a weapon. actually, some o' the recent artwork from pathfinder were what we were gonna use for PoE http://paizo.com/image/content/PathfinderRPG/PZO1129-Investigator_500.jpeg favorite mage image we has seen in years? http://paizo.com/image/content/PathfinderRPG/PZO1129_Swashbuckler.jpg swashbuckler looks good, and the next would be a good PoE ranger http://paizo.com/image/content/PathfinderRPG/PZO1129-Hunter.jpg many o' the jade regent and iron gods path covers got interesting icons as well. it makes a good deal o' sense if this is for a crpg. according to paizo, their pathfinder system is the mostest popular current pnp role-play system. we tend to believe paizo, but is only based on anecdotal that we sees popularity o' pathfinder. is many current pathfinder fans who have no crpg outlet. am not certain why obsidian would need or want to create print rulebooks that use PoE rules in the pathfinder setting, but we can see paizo wanting to get electronic gaming exposure for their pathfinder setting. HA! Good Fun! -
*sigh* again, the US is primarily a service-based economy, so such numbers is less (almost negligible) an issue. russia, on the other hand, is virtual complete dependent on petroleum exports. there is no reason to take this personal. is not an us v. them situation. is simply a fact that russia has an economy that makes it less capable o' dealing with sanctions than the typical european economy. to then add self-imposed food import bans compounds the problem. HA! Good Fun! ps recent Decline in trade deficit o' the US were actual a sign o' bad health during recent tough economic times.

In the context of world division of labor, most countries specialize in something. Finland exports wood and Nokia. Russia exports weapons and natural resources. you are correct that most countries have similar economies... which is why the gap 'tween the haves and have-nots is frequent seen as insurmountable. western european economies, canada, the US, japan and others is middle-class service economies, and/or manufactures who see most o' their export revenues derived from far more valuable and less volatile capital products. http://atlas.cid.harvard.edu/explore/tree_map/export/deu/all/show/2012/ http://atlas.cid.harvard.edu/explore/tree_map/export/nld/all/show/2012/ http://atlas.cid.harvard.edu/explore/tree_map/export/gbr/all/show/2012/ http://atlas.cid.harvard.edu/explore/tree_map/export/jpn/all/show/2012/ http://atlas.cid.harvard.edu/explore/tree_map/export/fra/all/show/2012/ http://atlas.cid.harvard.edu/explore/tree_map/export/usa/all/show/2012/ and even china http://atlas.cid.harvard.edu/explore/tree_map/export/chn/all/show/2012/ more than a few o' the nations above see significant revenue from natural resources, but their economies is diversified and healthy. it could be a weird smartphone app for all we know, but given that obsidian (known for crpg developments) is seeming partnered with paizo on a pathfinder title, we would be a bit surprised if it weren't a crpg o' some flavor. HA! Good Fun! -

AFAIK they can't use the D20 system rules as its prohibited in the Open Gaming License; so the game would have to have its own rule system (presuming that they couldn't also license the D20 rules independent of the Pathfinder setting but that seems like a lot of rules...) as others have mentioned, pathfinder Rules is effectively d&d 3.5.2. we like pathfinder settings, but their boards has become much like d&d boards in that a majority o' posts is dealing with rules debates and build optimizations. for many people, pathfinder is the rules far more than it is the setting. am curious how the paizo folks will satisfy their fans, fans who arguably equal or outnumber d&d fans, if a so-called pathfinder game would be using rules other than d20. Gromnir, on the other hand, would be quite curious 'bout a pathfinder setting game using a variation on the rules obsidian has developed for PoE. aside: we hope obsidian/paizo don't go the toee route and use existing pathfinder modules. many o' the pathfinder adventure paths is fantastic, but the last thing we wanna do is play a crpg version o' a module we already know. HA! Good Fun! Yeah, part of me is wondering if this is going to be the telling of Rise of the Runelords in video game format. I'm not saying that wouldn't be cool, but I think I would prefer an original story. 10 gold says it is set in Varisia though. we thought rise o' the runelords were a fantastic adventure path, but we know those modules very well. we know what is around every corner. we know every gotcha moment. we know every plot twist. we know where is traps and hidden treasures and the answers to puzzles. there were an old star trek tng episode where in data and jordie(sp?) go onto holo-deck so that data can solve a sherlock holmes mystery, or somesuch. ten seconds after starting the "adventure," data solves the crime. no surprise there 'cause data knew all the sherlock holmes stories-- he didn't need puzzle-out the whodunit. jordie observed that it were kinda pointless to have data solve a sherlock holmes mystery if the android already knew the solutions to all those mysteries. am guessing that the troika developers were on the star wars end o' the star wars v. star trek continuum o' geekdom, otherwise they woulda' known what a dead end recreating a known module were leading to. 'course the fact that toee were not a particular impressive adventure to begin with and troika added almost nothing to the bare bones o' the printed module did not help troika's efforts. HA! Good Fun! -
russian economy is looking more like a middle-eastern nation than is typical o' european countries. http://atlas.cid.harvard.edu/explore/tree_map/export/rus/all/show/2012/ is simplified, but you can see just how dependent russia is on raw materials exports, particular petroleum. russia is hardly the only nation that is not self-sufficient as it relates to food productions, but am going to leave to folks to decide for themselves how likely the russian economy is to absorb significant food import bans as well as foreign sanctions. HA! Good Fun!

oh really? please describe the angsty observations we made regarding dead money. we liked old world blues honest hearts were meh dead money? ambivalence would be the word we would use. we weren't impressed with the gameplay "improvements" that were designed to inflate gameplay hours as 'posed to being challenging or fun. we also were not impressed with dog/god and christine-- chrisA/obsidian frequent puts emphasis on character hook over substance. oh well. am s'posing wals musta' really liked dead money, so he feels as if we pee'd in his cheerios by criticizing aspects o' the dlc. as for tn serenity comments, we surely ain't gonna use revenge o' the sith as a benchmark for sci-fi movies. in any event, mal is or portrayed as an honorable man pretending to be a rogue in the tv show, but his main priority is to keep flying, to keep his people safe. so, instead o' following mal tv patterns, we got him choosing the mostest dangerous possible solution, and yeah, having the crew fight through armies o' zombies and Evil government forces so that he could eventual have a mano-y-mano fight and then press the magic button that fixes everything made us a bit sick. and again, river is so suck. "Two" HA! Good fun!" in a row mean Gromnir is really serious." we tried to edit that out... three tries. something went wonky with the board editing and we couldn't adjust weird font size and extra ending. am a traditionalist and so we gave up after mystical three. HA! Good Fun!

Are you implying Serenity is not a good Firefly movie? Because I will cut you. we hope we did more than imply. serenity suckage is to those ridiculous expensive dyson vacuums as the dysons suckage is to a 1-year-old child trying to use a straw. firefly suckage were on a relativistic scale. river were always a terrible character, but she got far too much screen time in the movie. as if we needed an autistic buffy from wheedon. also, the firefly stories were far better in tv 'cause they were limited to petty larceny and limited bits o' daring-do. have the crew saving humanity from itself were something you mighta worked up to eventually after five seasons or somesuch, but it were wrong for a movie after only a dozen or so episodes. we got lots more complaints, but is kinda pointless. we will note that extreme firefly suckage were not so much 'cause o' the lack o' production values or poor material as those things were little worse than the average b-grade sci-fi movie romp. nope, suckage were due to fact that tv firefly (with a few episode and character exceptions) were fantastic entertainment. firefly were good tv. serentiy were an average-at-best movie. suck. guardians looks like a much better vehicle for a save the 'verse kinda thing, but is built along similar lines as firefly with a crew o' irreverent misfits all taking turns at being funny. did chris pratt get his arse handed to him once or twice? that would further fit the formula. we will say that lieutenant uhura is a much better buffy than buffy or river. a pretty girl super soldier is all well and good, but make 'em near invincible little girls who clearly need a hug were causing the bile in rise in our throat. bah. HA! Good Fun! HA! Good Fun!

Writing in cRPG's -- a case study (Mass Effect)
Gromnir replied to PrimeJunta's topic in Computer and Console
I could go on with specific nits to pick, but I don't know if there's any point. (It is also true that a lot of sci-fi in general shares these problems.) well on that we agree. particularly in a game where you may have other races be playable or romanceable (*shudder*), having truly alien is not a particular pragmatic route. ME were, as most sci-fi is, character driven. that fact is one reason why most aliens in sci-fi is little more than exotic humans, and that is not a bad thing in such sci-fi. most o' the plot and setting nit picks is revealing a clear misunderstanding o' just what kinda story bioware were telling. we ain't been all that impressed with bio writing efforts for some time, but whenever we see multi-page denunciations o' plot and setting, we know that the critic is full o' hokum. HA! Good Fun! -

I approve, Tyron Smith is an elite level tackle. Tackles of his level of talent are very hard to find. now if only he could play db, lb and de, we would predict an 8-8 season for the cowboys. how on earth could the cowboys get so bad while having so much talent? HA! Good Fun!
