It is just one persons opinions, not a huge deal to me (8 is still a great score!)
I like Kevin's writing style and check out most of his reviews, but..... I rarely agree with him on scores or opinion on games. Still i respect his writing style and how he gets his opinion across. At the end of the day it is just one person's opinion, sure I don't agree with it (especially about the comments about dialogue/writing) but I respect his opinion and enjoyed reading the review.
Everyone will have difference of opinion on games! He liked Dragon Age 2 (same score as Pillars) and I hated it. He hated Alpha Protocol, I liked it. He loves the Dark Souls games, I find them slightly overrated and very lacklusting in writing, Gamespot gave Mask Of The Betrayor 7.7 back in the day but for me its a top 10 rpg of all time, He likes Inquisition more than Pillars, etc... You can go on and on about differences of opinions in games, even amongst friends, nevermind game reviewers.
For me Pillars is the best of the resurgence of crpgs, but I won't be mad if someone enjoyed Divinity, Shadowrun Dragonfall or Wasteland 2 more than Pillars, I had a blast on those games.

94 hours in and loving every minute! Can't wait for expansion packs!

I don't feel like this is the right way to play at all. I find I use stealth once in awhile outside of dungeons but not that often. Dungeons is where I would have it on a good deal.
-
Not an issue at all for me, I use stealth sometimes, mainly in dungeons, but definatly not all the time.
-
Game is simply amazing, from the art design to the writing to the combat, brilliant work.

cosign! Game is amazing!

South Park I played at release, encountered 0 bugs all the way through.
Cosign, I beat it twice and zero bugs, in fact it was one of last years least buggy games for me.
These people like to harp on Obsidian for buggy games but when the drop two that are near bug free they ignore it and keep acting like Obsidian has only put out buggy games.
-
Nope, I love the game to. Many people are just playing the game and not visiting the forums so it makes the handful that make a big deal out of some bugs look like its more people.
-
They do certainly happen. It's just so strange how nearly every single Obsidian release is packed full of bugs. Bad ones. But hey guys that's okay, it's not like they are EA or anything so let's not call them out on it. Let's not even get a little bit upset about it. Let's just defend them, and accuse people trying to report legitimate issues with THEIR game of "crying". Let's tell them to "get over it" and defend a company because "programming is hard" and "they worked hard".
Edit: The ratio of bugs to complexity? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Talk about reaching. WHO CARES. The game is buggy. That's all that matters.
So what your saying is that you feel, because the game is complex, we should give Obsidian the benefit of the doubt, and just sit back and wait and not level any criticism? Wow. Bye bye White Knighting, hello Obsidian Knighting.
You are crazy man, did you even play the previous two Obsidian games? South Park and Dungeon Siege 3? I had zero bugs with both those games. Not every Obsidian game is buggy, seems like you havn't played all of the Obsidian games if you say they are all buggy, the last two been fantastic as far as being bug free. How about instead of being so rude to others you go play South Park and DS3 and you will realize that no all there games are not all buggy and that infact the two previous to this where nearly bug free and the two most optimized Obsidian games they have done. A few bugs in pillars and you are tossing them under the bus? give me a break.
With trolls like you even when they do bug free games liek South Park and DS3 you STILL call them a dev that ALWAYS puts out buggy games, EVEN after they just put out two that are two very well optimized games.
-
What are you even on about??
Dungeon Seige was near bug free, South Park I had ZERO issues, no crashes, no game breaking bugs...In this game so far the only issue I have had is the pathfinding sometimes sucks.
-
The game deals with some heavy issues, I would argue even if you take out the curse words that there is MUCH worse stuff in there for a youngster.
-
As a vet of IE games, I love this game, the art design, writing and combat is fantastic.
-
Cosign, game is fantastic.

I have been having a blast, 32 hours in and only real issues I have had is the pathfinding having issues and a few audio bugs, nothing major. Love the game!
-
Things I really enjoy =
- Beautiful Art Design
- Great Dialogue
- Interesting Characters
- Good story
- Enjoyable soundtrack
- Fun combat (Took a little to grow on me but I LOVE it now)
- The game is a blast to play
- Good character Creation
Needs work =
- The pathfinding needs work, this is my main issue. When I tell a character to go somewhere or do something instead of going the right way they try to go another way that is blocked off sometimes).
- A few audio glitches
- The stealth could be improved a bit
I have played 32 hours so far and it has been a real blast, I look forward to future updates and expansion packs. Keep up the good work Obsidian! I loved Divinity original Sin and Wasteland 2 last year but this game is even better imo.
-
The game is not broken stop it with the attention seeking and acting entitled. If you have some things you wish improved or fixed then fine but its far from broken. I with the pathfinding was better, but I am not going to call the game broken.
-
Try playing the game more, the combat is fantastic once you learn the ins and outs. 28 hours in and loving the game, only issue for me is the pathfinding sucks at times. Like the combat more than the last two crpgs I enjoyed, Wasteland 2 and Divinity.
-
Couldn't disagree more, the combat is fantastic.
-
Me to, simply amazing game. 25 hours on it already, I have not had this much fun gaming in awhile

It is very much deliberate. Big parts are in voice, others in writing. I personally love it. It is like playing a game and reading a great novel at the same time.

OP a lot of people are having this problem myself included. They tried to reinvent the wheel and failed miserably. The result is you need to create gimmick builds to survive. It's nothing like D&D. It's a deeply flawed and poorly designed CRPG system and game on so many levels. It's a shame because the art and writing are nice otherwise.
This is not true at all from my experience. You don't have to create gimmick builds at all. I suggest you play more with the game and actually learn how it works. I don't have any gimmick characters and I am doing great on HARD.
The combat is not flawed at all, ever thought maybe it is you and not the game that might be flawed? Poorly designed? Deeply Flawed? I couldn't disagree more. Need to build a gimmick build to survive? Complete BS.
Gotta love it when people call things broken or flawed just because its to hard or things are not working out for them as they expected.
There is going to be hard guys out there, all over the map. Some that are to tough for you to take on right away, come back later and whoop them. This is a wonderful designed crpg, I suggest playing the game more and actually learning how to play it, soak it up.
-
Game is fantastic in almost ever way, love the combat personally. Maybe you need some more time with the game to learn its mechanics properly? Not sure why you are so angry at how the monk works.... hes my fav class and works brilliant.

The Gamespot review
in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Posted · Edited by kozzy
I loved Divinity, great combat, awesome coop and a nice gameworld but man.. the writing compared to Pillars was very very poor. Divinity I skipped a little of the dialogue while I beat it, Pillars though I honestly havn't skipped anything, enjoying it all.
My dream would be all the things Pillars Of Eternity does really well (Dialogue, story, characters, Art Design, etc..) but with Divinity Original Sin's Coop and Humor
As for the combat I personally like them both about even (Both better than the combat in the last modern rpgs I have played: Wasteland 2, Risen 3, Dark Souls 2, Shadowrun: Dragonfall and Inquisition)
