  1. Ok, i finished PoE today, man what a great story and a pleasent ending. Thumbs up Obsidian! Now its even more unfair to compare PoE with BG1 : Charakters, Story/Plot, Writing, c&c, reactivity... all is soo much better then in BG1, a comparsion is ridiculous. Combat is still the weak point of PoE (because of the terrible encounter design, the mechanics itself are ok imo), but its not realy badder then the combat in BG1 (without TOTSC).
  2. Gromnir is right, you cant compare PoE with BG2+ToB. And its also wrong to compare BG1+TotSc with PoE. To be honest : The best parts of my BG1 playthroughs are the TotSc Stuff. BG1 is a very mediocre RPG and its only a "RPG Legend" because of BG2.
  3. Heck no it should not. If you can choose between 'big city' and VO... which would you pick? I slap you if you picked the second btw. And yeah, the VO going on without the description lines inbetween which you had no time to read since VO wouldn't pause was... very new. And not something I would want doing again. descriptions lines >>>>>>>>> VO The Planescape´esqe writing style is one of the main strengh of this game. Better leave out VO´s instead of this detailed writing.
  4. I realy like VO. It COULD help to picutre npc´s better. But tbh : I would prefer ZERO VO if this means that you have more rescources to expand other things even more. More complex quests, better writing, better area design, more puzzles are much more important then VO.
  5. A guy from Berlin talking about beer... pff! There is only one beer in the world :
  6. We all know that you an a few other people do not like the game. So whats the point? Tastes are different, many people here and on the codex loves/likes PoE and you will not change this, deal with that.
  7. - Locked chest / doors (without key) - PoE only allows you to open these with mechanics, no mechanics => no opened door. Most of RPGs allow you to lockpick, bash/destroy or open by spell. A minus to PoE. Well, in BG/BG2/IWD it was FAR to easy to open chests BECAUSE of the spell. You didnt need to have an thief for that because of the open lock spell. It also worked 100%. In PoE you HAVE to train someone to open locks otherwise you cant open then. For me this is a plus because its it give me a reason to lean the mechanics skill. - Being stuck in combat - why can't you flee if you have superior speed or a magical meanings to escape (like invisibility)? Fencing the player once the combat has started removes another layer of depth, most of the classic RPGs allows you to change the map if you run away. LOL, realy... I have used this "tactic" in the IE games often : Enter a room, pull some enemies (mostly only a few followed me) and killed them, rewind and repeat until i have won. Also a great example : Pull some mobs and close the door. NPC in the IE games weren able to open doors. Sorry, again no valid point. - Cannot use items on neutral / hostile creatures to alter their stats or attitude towards PC. In Arcanum the humanoid creatures even picked up ground items near them, in PoE you cannot even drop an item on the ground. True, but : NPCs in the IE games didnt use loot too, also Fallout1/2 didnt worked this way. Do you blame these games that the npc´s didnt use stuff thats is lying on the ground? You comparing ONE game with all other made before. Are you serious? But why stop here : Lets blame that PoE doesnt allow me to ride horses or dragons... - No routine for neutral creatures in the game world based by day/night cycles. Even in BG1 some shops were closed at night, in Arcanum the shopkeepers were locking their shops and went to their beds. Not to speak of the living world of Ultima 7 True, but AGAIN, you comparing PoE with all Features of all RPG that comes to your mind. BTW : In BG2 there arent day/night routines too, BG2 sucks! PoE is far from perfect, but it could be a great start of a new cRPG series. I think your main problem is that you have WAY to high expections into this game, because you wish ALL good things from the old RPG´s you love to play. This is not realistic, with this attitude you will not enjoy a new RPG anymore in the future. You have to compare PoE with BG1 without the expansion and in this case.. oh boy... PoE wished the floor with BG1.
  8. Of course its a great game. Sadly the encounter design sucks. Writing, Art, Lore, Story (and the connection between both) , characters, c&c and reactivity are top notch. Its maybe not the best game for combat oriented players, because the weakest part is combat. (But its still ok imo) And dont listen to the nostalgic ****tards with an IE fetish, they will never love a game anymore (besides the usual "classics") Funny : As BG was released 1998 the Gold box lovers hated BG the same way like the IWD/BG-tards talk about PoE now.
  9. Wrong. PoE had surely a few issues, but its not the lack of depth in my opinion.
  10. Kids today -- they're no damn good! Why, when I was their age ... [grumble grumble hacking cough] Eh? Where was I? Oh yes, I was talking about my enlarged prostate. Gets me up three times a night! I never talked about kids. I meant the low attention span casual gamer.
  11. Oh please, stop thinking that Pillars will sell "a million" . What means it anyway? If the number of sold copies will raise significantly in the future then because of 60 oer 80% sales. The mayor turnover already happened, the important sale time is over. Obsidian made about 10 Million $, i thinks thats ok for an extremly niche game like Pillars. Relative high sale numbers like LoG 1 or D:OS where exceptionsm, there is a reason why the "cRPG" grenre is dead and crowdfuning was needed. This kind of gamers are now the main clientele for rpg´s : What exactly is the problem with "that kind of gamers?" All I see is a bunch of dudes holding controllers and a judgemental prick. Console Gamers, PPL that loves to "beat" games, Person with a low attention span, that expect hand holding, "social awareness" and epic presentation. I have no problem with them, except for the fact that this means that most games today are made for idiots. This video sums it up pretty good :

  13. Skyrim ist a nice Hiking Simulator with a nice build Gameworld. Sadly the RPG Part is terrible : Nohting what you do have consequences, the story is terrible, the writing uterly dull and the quests are totaly boring.
  14. Well, PoE´s sales should be 350k units at the moment : http://steamspy.com/app/291650 + GoG + Retail + Rest Maybe they reach 400k by the end of April, but surely not more. Text heavy cRPG´s are much more niche then City managment Games. My prediction after one year : Somewhat between Wasteland 2 and D:OS : 500k - 600k. D:OS is more "mass compatible" because of the goofy and colourfull look. And its 3D. I cant imagine that Pillars will outsale D:OS and i am pretty sure D:OS 2 or Pillars 2 will do alot worse, because the Retro RPG hype will be over soon (It will end with TON). People want their handholding grind Arenas, dating sims and "social awareness", not deep and compliated cRPG´s, just compare the Grimrock 1 and Grimrock 2 Sales : http://steamspy.com/app/207170 (Grimock 1 : 871k Sales) http://steamspy.com/app/251730 (Grimrock 2 :90k Sales) And her the Blackguards 1 and 2 Sales : http://steamspy.com/app/249650 (Blackguards 1 : 304k) http://steamspy.com/app/314830 (Blackguards 2 : 9k) It was fun, but dont expect an glorios comeback of the classical cRPG.
