Far Cry, Prince of Persia, Raving Rabbids for Free!
Slowtrain replied to Morgoth's topic in Computer and Console
Far Cry was the game that made me realize that awesome graphics can in fact make a game better. The exteriors are amazing. Everything else about the game is pretty mediocre but I had a lot of fun playing it just because if the sweepign outdoor levelss -
Thank you, mkreku for tardiness! It is much appreciated. Anyway, speakign of BIOS stuff, I was having occaisonal random problems with what appeared to be memory issues. It appears the nforce 680i chipset is just a wee bit tempermental about memory timing and voltages. gah. I hate that crap. I just want it to run. SO anyway, my bios was six months old so I updated to the current one, which was about 5 versions newer. Hopefully that wil solve my problems amd not force me to spend hours manually configuring my timing and voltage settings. Moving to a new system is always a pain in the butt as you learn its weirdnesses and labor to make it stable.

ANd due in Q1 2008: STALKER Clear Sky. A strange title which I actually kinda like. Read about it here: http://www.stalker-game.com/en/?page=news&item=47

It was worth buying the day it was released!

A new stalker thread for talking about the old game plus looking forward to the new one seemed like a good idea. FIrst off: Patch 1.4 has been released: http://stalker.filefront.com/file/STALKER_...;82268#Download At least one more major patch is rumored to be in the works still. Fixes:

well, its all back and running now. New motherboard, new RAM, new processor, heck I even threw in a second video card so now I am running SLI on 2 8600gts. I wasn't planning on putting together a new system quite yet, but I guess I kinda did. Oh well, at least I am ready for Bioshock, STALKER 2, Fallout 3. Weird how these things happen.

erhm, no. I'm playing on expert. But still, stuff like the Drassen counterattack is there regardless. Tru you can turn it off in the jag2options.ini, but again, I think having somebody new to the game have to go through an ini file making changes is not conducive to a fun gaming experience. And vanilla Jag 2 is a fantastic game. the 1.13 mod just makes it harder and more complictated for those who have played the venilla Jag 2 to death.
-
Why I would not recommend playing with 1.13: WIthout playing the original game, you would never how totally out of balance insanely difficult the game is in these screenies. This is stuff that was put in for people who know Jag 2 inside and out. Unless you have an incredible tolerance for frustration, I think it would totally ruin your game experience. Play Jag 2 gold patched to 1.12 first. If it goes well and you really like it, then consider adding the 1.13 addition.

huh? Hyperspace, Warp Speed, Photon Torpedoes and Laser beams definitely fall into the catagory of fiction (and particularly science fiction at that). Depends on the approach. James Blish wrote a pretty cool short story about travling at light speed or very close to it), can't remeber the name since I read it many years ago, which I would definitely qualify as SF. Star Wars light speed doesn't qualify as SF.
-
actually I would suggest playing the game first without the 1.13 mod since the mod makes sweeping changes to the game, many of which were wanted by people who have been playing Jag 2 for years and consequently make the game significantly harder. And I will say this: Infinity ENgine combat this ain't; combat is HARD when you are first learning the game.
-
You may want to roll in a little know francise called Star Wars. Maybe even the Star Trek's too. I would argue that any film that has spaceships traveling in "hyperspace" or "warp speed" or "making the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs" (wtf?) is fantasy and not SF.
-
Has SF ever been that big at the box office? I mean there is the occaisonal Blade Runner or 2001. You could stretch and probably make a reasonable argument for both Alien and Planet of the Apes (Heston version) as SF. Maybe The Matrix or Total Recall since they do use some aspect of technology which is fundamental to the narrative. But most big name "SF" films are more just action films dressed up with SF clothes. I think you find more SF in minor films such as 12 Monkeys or Gattaca.

That new Danny Boyle movie is supposed to be pretty good SF. Haven't seen it yet though.

I didn't hate Oblivion at all. Truth is I rather enjoyed it nad have been playing it on and off since release until my pc died the other day. But I can find a game enjoyable without pronouncing it the greatest thing since sliced bread, which the gaming media seems to be unable to do with some of the major releases.

Hah. That's a good call. I should have tried resetting the bios. Didn't even think of that. oh well. ANyway I got a core 2 duo 3.0 and a couple gigs of corsair RAM and an ASUS p5n32e-sli. Slapped it all together and it POSTed! wheeee. Now I just have to start adding all the old parts back in. I was just kidding about the color thing, btw.
-
I think in this case you need to take both the mainstream gaming press view and NMA. I don't think there is a middle ground yet. You have the gaming press which seems to be trying it's hardest to hype the game like no tomorrow and on the other side you've got the NMA that we all know and love. I don't disagree. We need look no further than Oblivion to see the gaming press hyping something as just about the the greatest thing ever when anyone who has been playing games for more than a week knows that such a claim is beyond absurd. I have no doubt we will see the same thing with Crysis and Halo 3 and Mass Effect et al.
-
I will trust the guys who know Fallout. NMA and DAC. I've always had a rule of thumb sort of thingie: never trust those with extreme viewpoints and axes to grind, regardless of the subject.
-
I bought some parts today. I don't know if they work together really, but I like the colors.

ok but don't yell at me if you don't like it. the graphics are somewhat dated as it used the old Dark Engine and all. I've actually already familiar with what it looks like, but thanks for the warning. The AI is quite good though as it uses the same engine as the Thief AI. You can bang on pipes with the crowbar and the zombies will come looking for you. Then you bash them in the head. IT'S ART! edit: Its a wrench actually. But its art either way.

Good Lord, you can't just throw out a heinous comment like that without saying why. OH wait, you're talking about Morgoth's post aren't you. hehe. nevermind

I notice it isn't on your top 5, though. STALKER was awesome and all, but SS2 was better. And anyway, I should be the one to decide your personal preferences. Its number 6. Missed it by THAT much.
-
IWD2 is pretty tiresome, unless you are just madly in love with IE combat and 3e rules. I would spend $50 on a copy of SS2 in a minute; its one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had.

Jag 3? erhm. I suppose anything could happen.
