  1. No idea why you're asking, cause I doubt it matters. Anyway, OP: Companions have no AI. You have to instruct them. If you think that sucks then... well.. yeah, but this game ain't for you Thanks.
  2. Right now Normal - Trial of Iron mode. Does difficulty make a difference?
  3. I'm actually trying to play this game after quitting three times. A problem I'm having is that NPCs only use their basic attacks unless I babysit them by continuous pausing to give commands. Mages won't cast spells. All others won't use special attacks such as knockdown, blind etc. Is there a way to get NPCs to do that without babysitting them? With the IE games you could write and use scripts to give the AI commands. Am I just missing something or is the way I'm doing it the only way possible?
  4. Exactly. You play the game for the adventure. Not to explore the sexual escapades of Joe the Dwarf.
  5. YES! Need romances so much >.< No we don't. Romances really don't add anything. For those of you who play pen and paper RPGs, how many of your characters did you ever roleplay having sex? These games are supposed to be about an adventure. Not the sexual escapades of Joe the Dwarf. It's the one thing I don't like about Bioware's newer games. They all have romance options. I think the time and effort spent could be used in other areas. It's almost as if the romance options were intentionally added just for all the adolescent, horny teenagers who play. Romance isn't needed unless it adds to the story or adventure.
  6. I voted none. Unless the voice acting is very good, I believe it's a waste of resources. Right now I think the VA in PoE is pretty bad. It would have been much better if they would have stayed with all text. One other thing I didn't like was the bits of profanity in the game. It just seems out of place. This is a fantasy setting not the boys locker room.
  7. The one thing I don't like in any of Bioware's newer games is the romance options. To me it doesn't really add anything to the gameplay or immersion. All the time and effort they spent doing the romance scenes and stories could have been put to better use on other game areas.
  8. With the right tactical commands, I can hold a front line pretty well. At least long enough for my mages to do pretty decent damage. Don't forget that in the BGs and IWDs you could have up to a party of six whereas in DA:O it's a party of four. It does make a difference. Especially when you can take two tanks or a tank and an off-tank. In DA:O I usually take a tank (Allistair), rogue (Leliana) and mage (Morrigan). My character is usually a mage or archer type. With the IE games you could use scripts or write your own scripts for the AI to follow. Pretty much the same as DA:O. NWN gives the same type of options and even gets more detailed with 3rd party mods. That's one thing I miss when playing PoE.
  9. I play in Exploration mode with all Mouse/View settings (turning, zoom etc.) turned all the way up. Sometimes the camera is a little fidgety depending on the area but it's not too bad. I zoom out and angle the camera just enough to see everything. After awhile you get used to it. I never use the other modes. Make sure you're completely patched up too : 1.23 I think it is. I seem to recall they worked on the camera in one of the patches prior to that which made it better. I remember experiencing exactly what you're talking about when I first started playing. I also play on a widescreen monitor so turning the settings up may work for me and not for you. You may need to adjust to your own preference. Hope this helps because NWN2 is a good game. Especially with all the mods (adventures) made with the toolset.
  10. Which is fine. But you need to realize that some of these arguments you intentionally or unintentionally made by your initial wording got some riled up for reason. I figure that from the Infinity Engine games it wasn't particularly the more strategy game-based approach to things you enjoyed. The additional micro and party management both inside and outside of combat, picking formations, dealing with the complex character and combat models and rules, that kind of thing. In fact, the original iteration of the Infinity Engine developed by Bioware was actually made for a prototype of a real-time strategy game, which are still around to some degree (though have always been more of a PC focused thing). You order characters around and give them orders and formations, hence the view, whereas in The Elder scrolls you've inhibited a single character and engaged in real-time action game combat right from the first game in 1993. In any case, both are obviously completely different playing experiences. That is an important distinction. The more action based mostly single character 1st/3rd person approach is more "modern" in that action games have come to dominate most parts of the market, whilst PC-specific strategy games have mostly become a thing of specialized PC publishers, such as Paradox Interactive who are distributing PoE. Those more action based games have been available during the IE heydays too, like the Gothic series. However those are a different kind of thing, which is actually great. Obviously as you rightfully pointed out, a game being played from top-down perspective isn't a requirement for a game to be an RPG or anything. Diversity is a good thing. And it's been sorely lacking. Remember that the story of PoE and other RPG Kickstarters was one of a strictly PC/Mac game at heart and their makers seeing little chance seeing it funded in the traditional way. Had nothing to do with the core mechanics being been there done that outdated -- if I would deal in polemics, I'd argue that beyond the fresh coat of paint I've played Skyrim (which I enjoy) to death and beyond in the past ten plus years too, and talking about idiosyncrasies the simple push-button combat as well as the creature AI didn't get much better likewise (in particular companions are as bad as ever, and the simplistic dungeons have become even more simplistic). It's all about more with the publishers Obsidian get do deal with doing different types of games as they expect to shift more copies across all platforms. It's a money thing, no more, no less. And it may be personal preference. However it's still a preference about two different kind of games. I don't play ES, DA or NWN because they're action based. I play them because I can get fully immersed in them the same way I did with the IE games 15 years ago. They are just as much cRPGs as any IE game or this game. There's just as much depth to them. Look at the title of this thread. The OP claims PoE combat is better than the combat in DA:O. Maybe in his opinion it is. But in my limited playing experience with the game it isn't. I know all about using tactics with IE style games. DA:O, DA2 and NWN2 gives way more options for tactics than this game does. I can program the tactics of each individual NPC in my party with those games. DA:I has limited options but sill more than PoE. This game is limited even compared to most of the IE games because you could write and use scripts to control the AI with those games. Some people act as though this game is a hardcore cRPG because of it's isometric view and that it has more depth. That all other games pale in comparison. They're entitled to their opinions but so am I. I didn't tell anybody to stop playing PoE. In spite of what you say, I haven't argued with anybody. I've been very polite and well mannered. I just stated my opinion of the game. One thing I've noticed is that people are quick to take offense or criticize anybody who doesn't like the current game that everybody is playing. I could have said this game was a piece of sh*t and let it go at that. Instead I tried to be very respectful of those who do like the game. I also tried to be courteous enough to explain why I don't like it. To give some sort of feedback to the developers. I stand by my comments about the game reminding me of just a mod created with a toolset. That was one of my first impressions. Want another example? To me the voice acting is pretty bad. It would have been better to go all text in my opinion. Some of the in game videos also seem pretty bad. Almost as if somebody copied a bad cartoon. The bits of profanity that I saw in the game seem out of place for a fantasy setting. It's a fantasy world not the boys locker room. If some people get riled up over my opinions then they need to grow thicker skins. My criticism and dislike is for a game. It's not personal. People need to realize that not everybody is going to like this game. Just want to point one other thing out too. You automatically assume that I don't like the tactical aspect of these type of games. As I stated before the games I play give more tactical options than this game. The IE games gave more tactical options. I don't see a difference between Action cRPG and Plain cRPG. They are all cRPGs to me. I'm familiar with the Sacred series, the Wizardry series, the Fallout Series and the Jagged Alliance series. I own all of them. I also have ToEE and the Gothics. I have all the IE games. But I have no desire to go back and play any of them . It's not because I like action games. It's because today's games offer so much more to the gameplay and immersion. Play some of the mods for NWN 1 & 2 and then tell me the Gold Box games were better. There's a Baldurs Gate mod for NWN2 thats just as good as the original. There's also an IWD mod too. I don't like ES, DA and NWN because they're action games. I like them because they're more immersive than the IE style games. Just as the IE games were more immersive than the Gold Box games.
  11. @Sven_ Don't really see how you figure I'm arguing. I explained why I didn't like the game. Some people responded to my posts and I responded to theirs. To me that's a discussion. Not an argument. I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything. I simply stated my personal opinion and my personal preference. This isn't a right or wrong issue. People have different likes and dislikes. While I used to like this type of game, I don't anymore. I've tried playing this game and just can't get into it the way I can ES, DA and NWN games. I can't even play any of the old IE games anymore including the enhanced versions sold on Steam. I own them all. But after playing the more modern cRPGs, I just can't go back. That doesn't make me right or wrong. It doesn't mean I'm arguing. Some people act as though anybody who doesn't like this game is an idiot or just a hater. I wanted to like this game. I went all in buying the game and the Prima guide. So I spent a good bit of money on it. But I just can't get into it. Not when I have what I consider better games to play. One other thing too. For me this has nothing to do with consoles. I don't even own a console. I'm strictly a PC gamer.
  12. Your main problem is that you keep implying that isometric or top-down RPGs are inherently worse than first person or third person over-the shoulder stuff. That's like, your opinion, man. And it's not shared by many people that backed this game. Isometric isn't a technology limitation and it has nothing to do with nostalgia, it's just a preference. There were plenty of RPGs and tons of first-person RPGs in the days of BG. Anyway, I can't stand first person or even third person over the shoulder RPGs. It's got nothing to do with nostalgia and it certainly isn't outdated technology. It's okay that you don't like these sorts of games, but implying that isometric perspective is 1) outdated, 2) inherently worse than first person perspective, or 3) only preferred because of nostalgia is simply incorrect. One of the main reasons that people backed this game is because they haven't found a lot of games to enjoy since the IE games. I don't like TES games or DA games or Witcher games (since the Witcher 2 disallowed isometric perspective). I'm really enjoying these Kickstarted isometric RPGs. For those of you who love AAA mainstream games, great, what exactly is the problem? Those games exist and are made all the time. Why are you here trying to convince some devs catering to different preferences than yours that they should change their game to suit the countless 1st person RPGs out there or trying to convince fans of isometric games that their preferences are based on nostalgia or something? It's all just my opinion. I haven't stated anything as fact. I did say that I can't play a top down, isometric games after playing games such as DA, ES and NWN. That is a fact. But I never said or implied that one was better than the other. I simply stated my current preference for more modern games. As for whether or not isometric is outdated, I believe it is. I was playing isometric cRPGs 15 years ago. They were good then but my tastes and preference has changed. Everything I have written in any of my posts is based strictly on my opinion and personal preference. I'm not trying to convince anybody that playing isometric games are wrong. I'm just saying that I don't like to play that style of game anymore. There is no right or wrong.
  13. @Hassat Hunter Not going to try to quote your whole message. I'll just comment this way. Over the years I've played and still play a good variety of cRPGs. It's my favorite genre besides sports games. DA, ES and NWN have as much if not more depth than any of the IE games or PoE. The stories are just as good. So is the roleplaying. Just because some of those games can also be played on a console doesn't make them any less of an RPG. Some of your comments make it seem as though you're actually trying to justify your purchase of PoE. You don't have to do that. It's not matter of who's right or wrong. It's what's right for you and me. You like PoE and I'm not trying to change your mind. For me I just can't go back to playing a top down, isometric cRPG after playing games that went way past that in what they were able to achieve. You many think some of them look ugly but they look just fine to me. PoE is what games looked and played like 15 years ago. After 15 years, ES, DA and NWN are what cRPGs look like today. I think today's cRPGs are better than what we had 15 years ago. Time and nostalgia plays a lot of tricks on people. The good old days weren't always so good. The one thing that made the IE games so popular back then was that there wasn't a whole lot of cRPGs to choose from. Before that it was the GoldBox games. BG wasn't that great a game. BG2 was pretty great though. IWD was pretty much just a hack n slash. PT had a good story. Today's cRPGs have all of that and more. I'm trying to get through playing PoE after reinstalling it. So far I made it to Gilded Vale and got to level 3. Took the wizard at the inn and created a couple of NPCs. Now I'm heading into the temple. But it's hard. I'm not intentionally trying to dislike the game. I spent money on it and the Prima guide so I want to get my money's worth out of it. It's just so hard going back to something like this and to me the story is kind of boring so far. Hopefully it picks up. I also don't like is not having any real control over my party in combat without pausing. I think the game needs some type of system where I can give the AI a lisf of tactical commands to follow. Much like DA or even BG. Even the DA:I system would be better than nothing.
  14. The main selling point of the game is that it is a spiritual succesor of IE games and its goal was to have the same feel as those games. That won't change. (hopefuly) My advice, next time read whats the game about before you buy it As I said this game was an impulse buy. I normally don't do a lot of research when I buy games because I know what I like. I thought I would like this game. I went all in. Bought the game guide and everything. Sadly I don't care for it. I'm sure it's a good game but after playing DA, ES and NWN it's just hard for me to go back to something like this.
  15. I feel sorry for you. I really *really* do. Probably something like this Pretty, no? (No) Nothing wrong with that picture except it would probably look better using the NWN2 toolset. No need to feel sorry for me though. A cRPG doesn't have to be top down or isometric view to be fun. ES, DA and NWN are fun cRPGs too. Like I said if PoE had come out 15 years ago, I would have thought it to be a very good game. But after 15 years I'm looking for a little more in my cRPGs. Imagine taking the PoE world and what it would look like if created with the same toolset that was used to create Skyrim. That's a lot better than top down or isometric views in my opinion. PoE may be a very fine game but it isn't for me. To be fair I'm going to reinstall and try to get further than Gilded Vale this time. But I doubt I'll change my mind. I moved past this style of game. Not a graphics whore by any means but with today's technology it's just hard to go back to something like this. I couldnt' play BG, PT, or IWD again either. They were good games for their time but that time has passed us by. It's hard to get immersed in something like this after playing ES, DA and NWN and seeing what's possible today.
  16. I read exactly what you stated... you didn't get to level 3, so barely got any impression on the game, then went to forums and took things that you could not *possibly* have confirmed as thruth's (no one's exeggerating on forums!!!) and now come to complain about issues you only know from 3rd parties. You know what that reminds me of? The many Alpha Protocol threads where people suggested 'improvements' or complained about it NOT EVEN HAVING PLAYED THE GAME. My mind was already made up by the time I got to the forums. I only went to the forums to see if other people felt the same way as I did. That's when I found out about the problems with balance, AI and path finding. Are you denying that those problems exist? There seems to be quite a few discussions about them and from what I've read the 1.05 patch is supposed to be a 'balance' patch. So apparently balance was off or it wouldn't need a patch to fix it. There are numerous threads about combat being too easy due to the AI. There's also threads about the poor path finding. I didn't complain about those things. I read about them. My comments were only pointing out that those were the same problems experienced 15 years ago when the IE games first released. Do you mean nothing was learned in 15 years to make the AI better or to fix path finding issues or to make sure the game was balanced. How much of the game am I supposed to play before it's okay for me to not like it? I didn't need to get to level 3 to know I didn't like it. I played this style of game 15 years ago. If this game had been released back then, I would probably consider it a good or great game. But after playing the DA series, ES series and the NWNs it's hard for me to go back to something like this. It would be hard for me to play any of the IE games again. When I first started playing this game two thoughts came to mind. My first thought was that the game reminded me of a mod somebody might be able to create if they had access to the toolset. My other thought was wondering what the game would look like created with the NWN toolsets. To me the game brings nothing new that I haven't already seen before. I don't need a 'spiritual successor' to BG or IWD. I can just pull those games out and play them again if I wanted something like that. I was looking for something new and different. The game setting is definitely different as are the rules. But it still reminds me of games I played 15 years ago. That's not what I was looking for. Maybe it's my fault for not following the game. It was an impulse buy for me. I'm not saying that PoE is a terrible game. I'm just saying that I don't like it. I'm willing to give it another shot after it gets a few more patches but I doubt my opinion will change. I'm just not interested in playing a game similar to what I played 15 years ago. That doesn't make me wrong or less of a gamer. It just means this game isn't for me.
  17. No read what I said. I tried playing the game three separate times and got not further than Gilded Vale before quitting. Then I went to the forums to find out if people felt the same way I did about the game - I don't like it. It was while I was on the forums that I found out about path finding, AI and balance problems. Thus my comments about those same type of problems being in BG 15 years ago. Feel free to be sarcastic when it's warranted but at least try to read and comprehend what's actually written first.
  18. No I didn't just base my opinion from what I read on the forums. I tried playing the game three (3) separate times and couldn't get past Gilded Vale before I quit. Actually I came to the forums after I quit to see if people felt the same way I did. That's when I learned of balance problems, problems with the AI and path finding. My mind was pretty well made up that I didn't like the game by the time I came to the forums. As I said in my other post, if this game had been released 15 years ago when these type of games were the norm then I believe it could compete with the BG's, IWD's and PT. In my opinion it can't compete with the games of today. This is 2015 not 1999 or 2000. The game doesn't really do anything new. It's a case of 'been there, done that' or deja vu. To have the same types of problems with pathfinding, AI and balance that occurred 15 years ago is a little disheartening. To me it shows a lack of polish. I just don't see the comparison between this game and the DA series or NWN series. In the short time I played this game two thoughts kept going through my mind. My first thought was that this game reminded of a mod that somebody might be able to create if they had access to the toolset. My other thought was what this game would look like created with the NWN or NWN2 toolsets. I don't want to belittle anybody who enjoys this game but I don't. I'm willing to give it another chance once it's patched up more but I doubt my mind is going to change. I just can't go back to playing a game like this. Especially after playing Elder Scrolls, DA series and NWN series. This type of game was good for it's time but that time has passed. At least for me it has.
  19. New guy here. Just want to say one thing. I think comparing PoE to BG would be a more fair comparison. Both games are/were the first in their series. BG2 is more of a refined BG. One thing PoE isn't right now is refined. Neither was BG when it first released. Honestly I don't really care for PoE all that much but I still think it's unfair to compare it to BG2. The reason I don't like PoE is because it really doesn't do anything that we haven't already seen. This type of game was big 15 years ago. I'm looking for something new and different. I don't want or need a 'spiritual successor' to BG or IWD. PoE reminds me of something a modder might create if they had access to the toolset. Three times I've tried to play this game and never got past Gilded Vale before quitting. The whole time I was playing I kept thinking to myself what the game would look like in the NWN or NWN2 toolset. Don't want to rain on anybody's parade but I just don't like this game. I'll wait for more patches and give it another chance but I doubt it will change my mind. I just can't go back to what games were like 15 years ago.
  20. I disagree. I've really tried to like PoE but I can't. Maybe for some retro games are good but this is where we were 15 years ago. It's hard for me to go back. I loved BG, BG2 and the IWD's but I just can't get into this. I've tried 3 times now and I never get past Gilded Vale before quitting. Technology and graphics have advanced so much that it's hard to go back to something like this. I've also played all the DA games along with the NWN series. In my opinion those games are way better than this. Not just because of the graphics but the gameplay is better too. If this game had been released in the late 1990's or early 2000's it would rank right up there with BG and all the others. But comparing it to today's CRPG's it doesn't come close as far as I'm concerned. I can't really put my finger on an exact reason as to why I don't like PoE. Except for the fact that it really doesn't add anything new to what's been done in the past. To me it's a case of 'been there, done that'. Then I started reading the forums and see problems with AI, pathfinding and balance. After 15 years you would think that problems such as those wouldn't happen in a game like this. It seems as though we're going retro all the way problems and all. It's another case of 'deja vu'. For me, I'd rather experience something new instead of going back to something that was good for it's time but is pretty much outdated now. Just my opinion. Don't want to belittle those of you who like PoE. I guess PoE just isn't for me.
