Is it just me or are a lot of areas incredibly dark? 

You're right, but I kind of like that there's actually a reason to walk around with a torch in dark areas.

Trying turning the Miscellaneous option under Graphics on. It seems to affect light sources.

Yep. Having Xoti and St. Drogga's Skull was really handy in some of the darker areas.
