What's the point of it?

I attacked a Dhow with my little sloop, managed to get close and board, killed the crew, and suddenly this ship that I just emptied is gone?

Even though one of the very first encounters with pirates, they board your ship with the express purpose of taking your ship. The game pretty much hints at the idea of being able to take other ships, then suddenly doesn't allow you to?

Only reason why I go for the boarding option, it’s only because I don’t get the attack sequence of the naval fight. I’ll just ram and board to get what I need. Maybe my second playthrough I’ll try to play around with it and figure it out.

I think maybe you get more loot, because the ship does not explode. Apart from that, the ship battle is...kind of wonky really, but fun for me i guess.

it would be too OP if you can just take over enemy ships tbh.

Ship boarding, IMO, is the fastest and best way to 1) Get all the bounties and 2) Get easy money.

Once you load a ship up with the fastest movement speed possible (sails, wheel, lanterns, etc.) just choose full-speed ahead each ship battle. You'll gain around 100 meters a move, you generally never take any cannon fire and if you do, its only once, and then you board. From there, wipe the deck clean, get loot.

It's a shame they didn't make the ship battles an in-game, dynamic mini-game or something--not text. For a game where you are at sea a great deal, they should have done a better job with the battles.

Agreed on the easy money thing. You could also buy that small ship with the cannons at the front in case your prey tries to run so you can still shoot them if needed
