15 Gb of assets. Is this normal?

Question

Posted

I installed the game on my linux partition, which has only 50 Gb of space on, which is usually plenty.  But I recently got a disc space warning, so I checked it out and the main use of space is Pillars of Eternity taking up 15 Gb, mainly in the PillarsOfEternity_Data directory, which consists mostly of a directory called assetbundles.

I'm pretty sure I would have noticed if this had happened when I installed the game originally, since I've had it for a while.  I just reached Defiance Bay in game, could that have something to do with it?  How can I reduce the size of this installation, because frankly 15 Gb is ridiculous.

I think that uninstalling the game can help. o:)
Another solution would be to delete files from the mentioned directory, when you will not be able to start the game, it will mean that you have deleted too many files.

Besides, 15 GB is not much, I have a basic game, plus two dlc and my directory has almost 25 GB.

Apart from removing files added in the last patch, eg a one and a half hour movie in hd, there is probably no way to size down the game directory.

There is a 1.5 hour movie in there?  Or is that a joke?

I guess I haven't installed a ton of games recently, but I don't think I have ever seen one that exceeded 8 Gb.  Like, for example, I recently installed Stellaris, which I believe is a more recent game, and it was about 7 Gb.  Why does this game need so much space, compared to that?

I have cleared out some space, and will probably move my partitions around a bit to add more space to this partition - I didn't originally imagine I would be installing any games on here when I set it up.

Title is "TheRoadToEternity.mp4" and tells about how pillars of eternity(the game) were created . The film should be in the "Documentary".
btw Other games on the same engine as Tyranny, Tides of numenera are 13 gb and 9.5 gb respectively. Both games without additions. Compared to other games, it's not so much, eg Witcher 3 or Mass Effect: Andromeda, DA: Inquisition is an average of 40 gb.
If in doubt, you can always check the system requirements in the field of steam or anywhere on the internet.

That's crazy.  I didn't realize games were so large now.  All of those would actually be fine on my Windows partition, but I set this computer up when there were virtually no big popular games being made for linux.

Games have been that large for a while now. Because a 500GB drive costs about $60 these days.

How can anyone in their right mind try to ship a multimillion dollar product without making absolutely sure that they don't upset all their players with a degree in Medieval English Linguistics?
