I've been playing this game for a few days but I still don't understand what's the purpose of the highlighted icon below (blue box)

That icon in temple location that allows you to evade to there an encounter by discarding two cards.

 

For example if you met a bane that you can not win, click the icon to excape to the temple.

Or if you met very nice boon that you would like to get, but you have wrong character trying to get it, you can evade to the temple so that the boon goes back to the location deck and another better suited character may try to find it later.
