Longtime Obsidian fan here, playing on iPhone 5s now, battery loss is significant at around 1 percent per minute or more, also heating of the phone. Does not occur with other apps, even UE games. Also the UI has issues, mostly with obscured buttons (ie the temp location close screen has buttons obscured by your cards). Otherwise great game, cheers.

Can confirm. App is definitely a battery killer and my iPhone 6+ gets pretty hot. I can only play in about 10-15 bursts before having to let it cool down. And there are times when the cards in hand cover buttons to continue like when the big bad shows up or when you're confirming temporarily closing a location.

The app is very demanding. Even big iPad air gets hot while playing this game. So smaller phones definite will be strugling.

And the hotter device the worse electricity balance will be. Time to move on to iphone7 or faster with this app!

Turning animations off From the settings help a bit.

Under Options --> Settings, you can also turn off "Effects."

It will disable a bunch of subtle animations that are so subtle that you probably won't even notice anything changed.  It may not have a colossal effect on battery, but it should still make the app a little less taxing on the phone.
