This could just be my misinterpretation of the rules... but when I was fighting a siren, I was under the impression that would be considered a combat wisdom check? The opposite seemed to be the case... Seoni wasn't able to use her Arcane Strike ability to substitute the wisdom check, while I WAS able to play a blessing of Shelyn(two dice for non-combat wisdom checks) for two extra dice instead of one.

Yep, it is not a combat but a wisdom based riddle Contest. And if you ansver wronly, you will be eaten alive! ;-)

So shortly, it is not combat, because it does not say combat. Some cards have for example wisdom or combat check. So you either use Seoni wisdom to wisdom check or that arcane blast to combat check.

I sympathize with LunarWolf a lot here because this confused me for the longest me. Here's the breakdown that helped me finally understand it:

1) If you fail a check against a monster, you take damage equal to the amount that you were short

2) Most checks to defeat monsters are combat checks, but not all

3) Most monsters have "combat" as an option to defeat, but not all

4) If you attempt a non-combat check to defeat a monster, either by choice or by force, point (1) above still applies

I had it in my head that "if I'm taking damage when I fail, then it's a combat check," and that's not right. Hopefully the above breakdown will help anyone who was confused like I was. :)

+ 10 points for Borissimo and a gold star next to his name on the chart of beta testers!
