by saying "dismiss" I mean firing them permanently, not leaving them at the stronghold.. there is the stupid 8 adventurer limit

Just kill them.

 

Out of combat beat them down until zero health. When they get back up maimed just hit them again.

Execute them.

Multiple options exist;

Go to Tavern and remove them.

Execute them and they will no longer take roster space.

 

Bring up console and use: ManageParty  (same as tavern use)

 

You can also bump up the max adventurer slots to 128 with iemod

By remove, they mean remove from party to stronghold. They don't mean execute, that's not an option in taverns or anywhere else, other than combat.
