Necromancy Suggestion

Recommended Posts

"Some extremists are opposed to any and all necromancy, and tales say that a quiet and powerful cult that has worked for centuries to discredit, trap, and even murder necromancers for their efforts." - Source: Gamepedia - Pillars of Eternity.

After encountering Necromancers in POE, I wondered why couldn't a PC be one. It would make for an interesting choice with new spells and the threat of a powerful cult that seeks to destroy all Necromancers.

i.e. Necromancer available as a new class or subclass of a Wizard (Necromancy Talent unlocks spells in this class).

The cult that seeks to destroy all Necromancers; and their allies(!), has wandering parties of adventurers that are attracted by news of Necromancy being used in Public. The more you use Necromantic skills in public the more you attract the attention of a guild that hates necromancers. This powerful cult has their headquarters in........? This cult will attempt to discredit, trap and even murder the PC necromancer. They will spread rumors about the PC Necromancer, often blaming him for a crime committed by others or the disappearance of a person. Will the PC try to avoid the guild or will he attempt to find its locations and attack its membership?

I'd say it is already a Chanter Build, because they have all the "Raise Undead" type spells (Skeletons, and IIRC Phantoms and Wisps). They also have more of a "Light-Side" summoning, where they summon living creatures (Drakes and Ogres).

Although, a "Warlock" type of Summoner would be pretty cool, with malicious curses and spells to summon the dead, or maybe even turn others into the undead *shrug*

Heya,

But in doing so, it's just going the direction more of the older Infinity games, where you could build a necromancer. Pillars is a different game. Less importance is placed on specifics of a starting character, and rather how you develop them changes it. For example, in the past (when you could build a Necromancer and play that way), you couldn't wear plate armor and cast, and you couldn't be a caster and have low intelligence, but now you can do a lot of this without the word "necromancer" above your character.

In PoE, the necromancer is available, if you simply look at what's there and use it specifically, limit yourself to something, and you'll see it's there:

Chanter. Summons undead stuff (phantoms, skeletons, etc). Auras that frighten and lower enemy stats or drain their energy. Spells that unleash magical power and paralyze or push things around. This screams "necromancer" to me. It's more your imagination, or the need to see the word necromancer than anything, but it's totally in the game.

Very best,

Trying to avoid major spoilers, the Gamepedia article actually refers the main plot of the game. Necromancy is a sub-specialisation of animancy, and the cult referred to will try and hunt you and kill you, irrespective of what you get up to.

Everyone knows Science Fiction is really cool. You know what PoE really needs? Spaceships! There isn't any game that wouldn't be improved by a space combat minigame. Adding one to PoE would send sales skyrocketing, and ensure the game was remembered for all time!!!!!
