Hireing a Level 5 adventurer is only level 1?

When I go to the inn in gilded vale and hire a adventurer, I can pick from a level 1-5 adventurer.... I pick a level 5 and they are still only a level 1 character. why??? please help

Look at their portrait, there is a small golden plus to lvl them up to lvl5

Yes, you have to manually level him/her up. Sometimes when the portrait background is of a light colour (white/yellowish) it makes hard the gold cross to see.
