Please don't spoil anything for me and only answer the question.

I have a party of 5 (barb,pally, chanter, priest, mage) and I seem to be having a huge problem with this lord guy. Do I suck, am I rushing it too fast (lvl 3), or is he just really tough.

It's a tough fight. I went in at the same level with a fighter, barbarian, priest, mage, and cipher (me). I only managed to succeed through bouncing a bunch of Rolling Flames back and forth through the melee.

Aloth was the only guy left standing at the end.

This fight is tough, but it is doable.  Make sure you have the best gear you have on all of your characters, including enchants and potions.  Position everyone as best as you can to protect the soft targets, and USE CC!  Keep groups prone with the slicken spell, use bewildering spectacle to make all the mobs attack one another, and focus fire.
