I sincerely believe we are JUST PEOPLE...and I try hard to focus only on that. Further, I do not believe I can add anything to the wonderful words others may posted this day. Others are more eloquent, knowledgeable, and certainly smarter than I. But, I am angry. And, I know our country is in trouble. Our founders came from lands ruled by monarchs. They knew the danger of a strong, unchecked government. For that reason, they framed the Constitution of the United States and three branches of government. Each branch would hold the power to keep the others in check. The last line of defense would be the courts where laws would be challenged that violate the constitution. For over more than 200 years, good men and women died for that Constitution. They died for the freedom to live their lives, and the lives of their children and children's children, in peace as they saw fit. Today the US places more people in jail, per capita, than any other nation. This is freedom? What the hell happened? We see school officials working with local law enforcement and filing charges again students who assert free speech. I recall campus protests from my youth against a war. I recall innocent, unarmed students gunned down at Kent State. It was important enough for me to make a pilgrimage there and stand where innocent blood was shed. Walsingham Posted July 7, 2013 Author Share Posted July 7, 2013 Since I'm in the middle of Grand Jury duty (in Oregon, criminal indictments are issued exclusively by Grand Jury, meaning only citizens summoned for jury duty can actually indict people for crimes,) I'm hoping to get some Roman Candle assault cases before the end of the month (turnaround time between arrest and presentation of case to GJ for indictment by DA is typically about 1-2 weeks. Fingers crossed.) I got shot in the face by a child waving a roman candle when I was in Southeast Asia. Narrowly missed my bloody eye. I'm ambivalent about the incident because it didn't scar, and I've always wanted a cool scar. It's for the better, the only scars people notice are the disfiguring ones. Plus, I'm sure Fate would have made my scar shaped like a nob or something. "It wasn't lies. It was just... bull****"." -Elwood Blues tarna's dead; processing... complete. Disappointed by Universe. I mean the rhetoric is fantastic and full of imagery and epic history, but it's pretty light on actual losses of freedom. The Kent State shooting would seem to lessen the point, since there haven't been many protests lately that resulted in dead students. What specific students is this blog speaking about? It's actually quite common for students to protest and then get arrested, it has been happening for decades. I actually have more freedom than I did a couple weeks ago.
