They basically asked Brian Fargo and Chris if they would/wanted to work together again, someday. Chris said this:

 

Brian gave me my first job in the industry, I loved being at Interplay while he was there, and I love Wasteland. If there was a way to work both with Obsidian and work with Brian and InXile, I would do it.

 

This got me thinking. With the recent Kickstarter craze and in turn there beeing an actual way to circumvent publishers...

 

Wouldn't a scenario like this be possible?

 

1. Several (Private, smaller-to-middle-sized) Devs banding together (not literary, more in the sense of talking with each other)

2. Found a NPO (Non-profit orgaization) based on making passion games.

3. Use Kickstarter as a plattform to get funding for the project.

4. Reinvest Profits gained (through sales or surplus gained at Kickstarter) in future projects. Set Kickstarter goals lower accordingly or completly fund a project with it.

5. Profit.

 

This would also allow the sharing of both creative (eg Brian+Chris) and technical resources between devs.

 

Edit: Also maybe using the kickitforward idea too and invest a certain % back into the Kickstarter community. Not only regarding VG's of course.

 

 

p.S. This entire post was made while bored and not much thought was put into it. Still find at least something similiar interesting to look at.

Doesn't that get a bit too convoluted though? I thought one of the appeals of Kickstarter is that you're in really close contact with the developers and know exactly what you're funding? Also can you call an organization devoted to make games that will be sold truly no-profit?

 

Not to be a killjoy, I think it's an interesting idea, I'm trying to understand.

That wouldn't exclude the contact with the devs and you still know exactly what you are funding. In fact said organization could help devs that don't have the resources to make an interesting kickstarter site or videocontent and so on. Think of it more as just as a tool that helps organization and communication between devs interested in making *niche* projects like these.

 

Non-Profit here meaning that the money gained by the organization is reinvested in future projects and so on. Not just kept in the pockets.

I understand better now.. and mmmh.. I don't know, I tend to be a bit jaded and cynical (I was initially skeptical Fargo would get funding for Wasteland 2) but this might be an interesting idea. Maybe mail Avellone?

 

EDIT: Obvs, there may be problems I haven't thought of yet, which is also why it would be better if someone else besides actually checked this thread.

Not really the same thing (at all in how it works). But good example of a similiar previous idea.
