Challenging/frustrating games

The glory of beating a tough boss is lessened when my wife and kids just roll their eyes at all my awesome exploits.

Or by initially just having a maximum of 1-2 hours to play /day due to work, social circle and gf/fiancee/wife, even without the kids. When even the shortest RPG starts stretching out into months just due to lack of time, you tend to be unwilling to spend a night or two grinding the same spot.

You just completely described my normal playtime, and still i was able to manage to get Dissidia and Final Fantasy XII into 230+ hours played time

They may be playing Dungeon Seige 3 with you.

Yes, average time for leisure is, another key factor. Of course, publishers know the players' time is limited. In fact, I tend to spend time I used to have assigned for gaming on other things. Speaking of which, I guess almost all the info about E3 has come out now... :)
