Gothic 3: Forsaken Gods

You are very brave to subject yourself to this game, MC.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

Well, in all fairness the game was made in India, by and Indian company..

It's not exactly a country known for their quality games... or films... at least by western standards (not to say that those are better than Indian standards).

Yeah, well.. JoWood outsourced the development of this expansion to an Indian company called Trine Games. Not the best sign to start with. Apparently they've wrecked an already crappy engine, tried to make new quests in the exact same world that Gothic 3's story plays out in, added ridiculous prerendered Bollywood-style cutscenes and failed to remove stuff from Gothic 3 (that are now laying everywhere, unusable).

So.. It's basically an added layer of semi-broken quest scripts on top of a semi-broken game, made by Indian people with a very poor grasp of English and NO grasp of what made Gothic so popular with the fans in the first place. Combine that with a few thousand new bugs plus the confusion of having old quest stuff everywhere and you've got a success on your hands :D

I was hoping they'd be able to pull of something playable at least, but apparently not. Not even I am buying this expansion.

One down (wayyy down), two to go (Ancaria: Gothic 4 and Risen). Let's hope at least one of them is good!

Well, the devs of Gothic 4 helped the Gothic 3 community patch folks with optimizing the engine, so that's atleast one plus.

But yes, Gothic III was already pretty bugridden, even with the patches. Often I found myself dying from enemies UNDER the floor, stuck in places forcing a reload and don't forget the hundreds of broken quests .

(PS. without the community patch you got 50XP for killing the PC :D)

Oh well, I can't complain. Despite all the buginess I had some long fun for my 5 bucks.

I had no idea what I was going into. I've heard that Gothic games can be buggy, but I assumed that as this is an expansion, a large number of bugs would be squashed already.

I enjoyed Gothic 3, after the 1.6 community patch because it ran like a dream, but Forsaken Gods lags for about 10 solid seconds every other 5 seconds and talking with someone has 10 second pauses each time a new person talks, it's virtually unplayable for me which is sad since I enjoyed Gothic 3 so much after the patch. I'm hoping the community can do with expansion what they did for the original.

I blame Piranha Bytes for the Gothic 3 bug-generator, despite having almost a year overtime for development. However, Forsaken Gods bill goes this time fully to NoGood. Or how else can there be bugs that were already fixed in the CP? And what about that "rush it out before Christmas" attitude? That's very unprofessional, and outsourcing it to an Indian company that had to learn the codebase etc. from scratch and make an Expansion in a too small time frame shows how much NoGood really cares about it's property. :x

Does this really feature Bollywood-style cutscenes because if it does I'd like to purchase a dozen copies.

Me too! That would actually make the game enjoyable :x
