samm
Yeah well, not that it needs to *shrug* There's only so much you can do for IPC that reflects in games. It's about time Intel took AMD's approach concerning server processor scaling abilities. I speculate however that it's not quite as 'bad' as depicted in the article though as far as gaming speed-ups are concerned. Magister Lajciak
That's a pity, but it also means that I need not wait for Nehalem to upgrade my laptop. I will probably just get a Penryn notebook sooner, as waiting for Westmere would probably take too long. Are there any new Penryn models planned? Magister Lajciak
Note: When I say 'new Penryn models', I mean for laptops, since I am planning on acquiring a new notebook, not a desktop.
Kaftan Barlast
Gaming has been all about GPU speed and memory for years now, this isnt really news. But for us that just need more raw crunching power, its the shiznitz. neckthrough
AnandTech's detailed Review is up. The Core i7's general purpose performance is solid, you're looking at a 5 - 10% increase in general application performance at the same clock speeds as Penryn. Where Nehalem really succeeds however is in anything involving video encoding or 3D rendering, the performance gains there are easily in the 20 - 40% range. Part of the performance boost here is due to Hyper Threading, but the on-die memory controller and architectural tweaks are just as responsible for driving Intel's performance through the roof. As expected, Nehalem doesn't offer too much for gaming or general purpose apps (and as Kaftan said gaming's completely GPU-limited anyway). What it does do is smooth out several of the kinks in the Core 2 architecture, which is why you see such huge performance boosts in certain applications. Nightshape
Gaming has been all about GPU speed and memory for years now, this isnt really news. But for us that just need more raw crunching power, its the shiznitz. This is obviously true at some level, but in regards to consoles, particularly the PS3 sometimes it makes more sense to use the SPU's to do tasks you would do on the GPU. I came up with Crate 3.0 technology. Crate 4.0 - we shall just have to wait and see.Down and out on the Solomani RimNow the Spinward Marches don't look so GRIM!
