Effects of the videogame industry on blockbuster franchises

Featured Replies

When I consider the Alien films until now, apart from the established premise of how and what in Alien, there really hasn't been anything else. Alien introduced the Alien and its lifecycle and it was scary. But after that all the films seemed to only continue along the "it's scary" vein.

We got an Alien leader that was bigger in Aliens, and continued on the scaryness aspect of battling them. Greater numbers, but no new story.

In Alien 3 again people being slaughtered by the Alien (almost the same as movie 1), and Ripley dies aswell in this one. Again no new story.

In 4 Ripleys come back and again people are slaughtered by aliens, and again

no news to the story.

If we look at the details of all the films they are great, Ridley's cinematography, Cameron's eye for detail, Fincher's mood, Jeunet's visuals. But when we pan out there really hasn't been anything "considerable" that has been introduced to the franchise. It's just rehashing over and over again what the aliens do to humans when both are in contact, to me that formula is getting very old.

It is understandable in a way; when something becomes a very large cultural icon, the law of probability ensures (law of probability = there are far more greedy non visionary cowards that would rather guarantee the franchise continues raking in dollars doing what it has been doing, as opposed to the few strongwilled artisitic souls / inspirational greats that would have dared to extend the story further than we have seen, accepting the financial risk knowing they would reap far greater rewards in the end.) that human nature leads us inescapably to AvP.

It seems as if imagination has never resurfaced after the premise was envisaged in Alien 1. One could think of millions of storylines that go further than human decimation by xenomorphs thereby inducing fear in the audience.

Imagine a storyline that ties in with Alien 1 (i.e. the till today unexplored fact that the company had knowledge of the presence on LV426 and sent the Nostromo there in the first place). Formulate a storyline that atleast has something to do with that at its beginning. Or about the spacejockey's mission or even world, then design the "planet of the alien" as it where, the xenomorphs home planet, an entire Gigeresque world (not a sketch or two but an entire world). Why is it biomechanical in the first place? Is it really vulgar? Or is it beautiful? Why are we drawn to it? Why are the shapes as they are? Are there other species than the alien on this world? Is the xenomorph a particular manifestation of something? Are there other manifestations? What do they say about death and life? What do they say about things in a broader spectrum than life and death? What references are there to Jungian psychology? Or Freudian? What is Gigers aim in life? What achievements of the spacejockeys made them think they could tame this manifestation, what did they tap into? What goes on in Gigers head? No need to answer all of these questions either, just make sure they are asked!

With the right research this franchise could go from a mid-grossing scifi middle of the league player to one of the top cerebral fantasies ever created by mankind, as it is so intricably linked to the very psyche pleasurably digesting the fantasy.

Grow the universe with riveting stories that are even more terrifying and exhilirating.

I don't know the team tasked with creating this game, their artistic background, opinions on the franchise, decisionmakers, subject matter experts, etc. But this team is in a position with this (to be infamous) videogame, to setup content and a storyline to rival those filmed by Scott and Cameron and really set a new benchmark. This benchmark, if it is extraordinarily classy, would be a punch in the face to those slippery buckets of slime at the management team of Fox who have raped this franchise and set a moronic new benchmark with AvP.

I agree that it would be nice to learn more about the Aliens/Aliens universe, and the "Space Jockey" race has not been touched in canon films since the original.

If Obsidian did deside to go more indepth with the Space Jocky story I want to know how they will handle it... I've read that in some of the books it is designed with an Elephants trunk but in the original design the 'trunk' was supposed to be a air hose and there is a helmet around the Space Jockys head too.

In the comics, the Jockey is shown to have an elephantine trunk. This is inconsistent with the original concept. An inspection of the concept art done by H.R. Giger, shows that the "trunk" is supposed to be an air hose and there is a helmet surrounding the Jockey's head. This is also supported by the fact that soft tissue such as elephant trunks do not fossilize. This does not leave out the possibility of a different kind of trunk, but the one depicted in the comics is very much like an elephant's. None of the works depicting the Jockey with a "trunk" are considered canon - the only canon appearance of the Space Jockey is in Alien and its novelization and directly related works.

Also I wonder how they will act towards people I read that in some of the books the Space Jocky want to wipe out humanity or inslave them but only choose not to due to there hate for the Xenomorphs, but the actors and crew of the original movie felt that the Space Jocky was more of a noble and peaceful race.

In Mark Verheiden's graphic novel series Aliens, a Space Jockey-like creature is encountered, and is able to communicate telepathically with humans. It is shown with pink skin, a tail and an elephantine trunk, and yellow, cross-shaped eyes. In the novels the Space Jockey's race are shown to be malevolent, only refraining from attacking humans due to their immense hatred of the Xenomorphs; a common enemy. They intend to wipe out and/or enslave humanity once their war with the Xenomorphs is over. Later books never expand on the idea.

The Book of Alien notes that the actors and crew felt instinctively that the Space Jockey was a benign creature, though they could not say why. In the novelization of Alien by Alan Dean Foster Ash describes the Space Jockey's race as a noble people and hopes that mankind will encounter them under more pleasant circumstances. It also states that they were larger, stronger and possibly more intelligent than humans.

I would prefer if the Aliens RPG if touching on anything to do with the Space Jockey/Pilot would try to keep it as close to the original idea behind the Space Jockey as possible... No Trunk and not an agressive race.

Movie franchises which --> into games have the potential to be good.

Specific movies which --> into games (AKA as "movie games"), however, are always pieces of utter sh1te. No exceptions.

Games which --> into movies are usually disappointing as the games themselves tend to be modernly dumb-downed, which in turn is geared towards a dumbed-down movie mass audience.
