Very quick X800XT question

So I got it, and it comes with a Y-shaped split cable, one end going into the vidcard, the other ends with that plastic Molex ends. I connected just one in and it seems to run ok, though I havent tried any games yet. Should I be plugging in both?

PSU = 400W.

Just did so, and I see no change.

Tried NWN2.. okay, this is silly.

CPU: Athlon XP, core speed 2ghz

Ram: 1gb

Vidcard: 256mb ATI Radeon 9600 Pro.

Got ~5fps in Neverwinter; ~10-20fps in indoors and other outdoors with 1.03beta's improvements. High textures, no shadows / point light / normal map / water / bloom, 2 lights, point mapping on everything, 1024x768.

Upgrading to 1.5gb ram did nothing, so i scratched that, back to 1gb ram.

Changed vidcard 256mb ATI Radeon x800XT AGP. Should be way, way, superior.

No changes. I can now turn on Char shadows (med shadows), up the resolution to 1152x864 and so some other things with no fps change, which is good; but reducing options doesnt change fps either. So it's impossible for me to get better fps than before (which sucks), and now its just a bit purtier.

Going to try other games and also some ini tweaks, but as I recall other people with my card and similar specs had a much better experience. Is there something else I needed to do other htan plug in the card and install the latest ATI driver?

  • 2 weeks later...

NWN2 is bad game to test systematic benchmarks on, because well...it pretty much sucks on every rig. Bad engine coding no doubt.

Now Oblivion's a fairly demanding game where you can actually see sizable differences through alternating hardware and in-game graphics settings.

Vidcard: 256mb ATI Radeon 9600 Pro.

I don't know if it makes much of a difference, but I'm playing it on my work laptop, which has an ATI X1600 Mobility processor, catalyst driver packaging version 8.201.2-051124a1-028716C-Acer. That gives me 20fps on the larger outdoor areas and 35 fps in indoor areas.

Edit: That's with a decent resolution and all the flash except shadows which are the lower (Dropshadow?) setting.

X800X? I thought it's X1800XGT...Why don't you get a X1800?

Oops...Never mind.

Meh. I've come to accept the fact that X800XT over 9600Pro will do little more than give me real normal mapping.

I've played games on 10-15fps for so long, it doesn't really bother me too much anymore.
