He could have taken Peter high in the sky and once he reached a certain speed let Peter go, having the momentum carry him the rest of the distance, then do a dive bomb straight down to escape the blast radius, then skimming the surface till he could slow down. I was thinking the same. Though with the amount of radiation Peter was giving off I doubt he would have survived long even if he did survive the blast. The area between the balls and the butt is a hotbed of terrorist activity.
