Every time I try to log on to either AIM or MSN Messenger I run into the problem where the very second the program loads and my buddy list appears, it then runs into an error and shuts down.

It's weird because both worked perfectly fine last night, but today when I turned on the comp and tried to log on I encountered this problem.

As a side note (or maybe it's related), Internet Explorer is causing the same issues for me. It won't load a website, so when I go to close it down using the upper right corner 'X' it causes an error message that needs an "end now" command to close.

Any ideas what's the deal?

This happend to me about a week ago. I just left AIM alone for a day or two, and the next time I tried to sign on it worked.

Does it say anything about a faulty connection?

I have no idea of the cause, but a suggestion of a potential fix (or at least some troubleshooting). Try installing one of the alternate messengers that supports the MSN and AIM protocols. Not only because it's simpler than running separate programs, but to see if they show the smae problems. If they do, it has to be something with how your computer communicates with the internet or those protocols specifically.

Does Explorer have the same problem on all webpages or just occasionally? If on all, are you using Firefox or something now?

Gaim - http://gaim.sourceforge.net/ (my favorite)

Trillian - http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/

I use GAIM at work, and it works pretty well.

Trillian gives me a crash error message when I try loading it up.

This line shows up in the crash error box:

C:Program Files\Trillian\Crash Files\crash.1156567171.dmp

That's a generic report telling you that the terminal error. you would need to either read through the memory dump, or send it to someone (tech support) to read it for you, to ascertain what the cause was.

My best guess, based on the paucity of information supplied, is that you have a virus (more than one internet application being affected).

You can also check the AIM/MSN/whatever website for any issues, but I use both protocols and have had no problems. It's a local issue, to your PC.
