Doom3 mods?

Arkan

Recommended Posts

I'm not convinced it's the issue, but the easiest thing is to get a replacement. Good idea, alan. I've already authorized my RMA and packaged the video card. It doesn't cost me anything other than the shipping and it's got a good chance of fixing the problem. If it doesn't, then I'll work at it from other angles.

Instead of continuing to kill this thread (sorry, arkan) I'll create a new one to educate others with my mistakes.

BTW: I hear there's a flashlight mod that lets you use your flashlight on your weapons. I'm thinking about finding it, even though I'm not one of those folks who hated the flashlight in DOOM 3.

It's uncommon enough though that it's not usually an issue. As an aside, one thing I like about ATI was when my motherboard didn't have a powerful enough AGP slot (though I didn't realize it at the time), and I figured my problems were related to my video card. When I got my card back from ATI, they mentioned that their tests showed nothing wrong with the card I gave them, but to be on the safe side they shipped me a new one anyways. They also suggested other things too look at (such as the AGP slot) if the problem persists.

I remember my Dad telling me about a story how when he worked with Digital in the late 70s, and he was servicing a computer at one of the local Oil Refineries. He was convinced of what the problem was an ordered the replacement part. When he replaced it, the problem persisted. So he was very confused. So he started testing other things and couldn't figure out what the other part was.

On a hunch, he tried a third part, and it turns out through bad luck, he had two components that were both faulty and created the same error.

Apparently it was quite expensive as it meant oil wasn't being refined, and the part itself wasn't particularly cheap :D

I've managed to get a faulty motherboard, two of them I think, and a dead processor or two, or three, over the years.

Great. That sucks. Well, I've bought it and I'll just have to see if the replacement works better. I wonder if it's just one brand or if the design is bad. Not that it really matters, since I've bought Asus and a return will cost me 15% of the price. Don't get me wrong, if this one goes all thermal on me, I'll get my refund and then, just to show my appreciation, I'll buy a new motherboard with crossfire and nvidia will lose this particular sucker's money.

Well, I know my Asus enhanced driver utilities showed the GPU at 650Mhz and the RAM at 1600Mhz. If that's the case, then I can expect lower performance if I lower the clock speed without the whole "burning a hole in my motherboard" experience?

EDIT: The card should work at 650 and 1600. Still, the problems I'm seeing match, almost exactly, the problems I see associated with overclockers overheating. ...And my card is not in a "hot case." Looking around, I see that there is an issue with the 7900, but I also understand that one person with a problem makes a lot more noise than several people without a complaint. I'll keep you guys posted as to my experience with the replacement card. One thing that is certain is that there is an increase in RMAs for the 7900s.

"Doom Mods" =]

Eldar, I haven't heard about the latest buzz that Bok is alluding to, and it sounds like a driver issue to me, but your adventures are not making me confident about nVidia ... :p
