Cantousent Posted May 18, 2006 Posted May 18, 2006 The paragraph is from Iliad I think. It's where they leave Lemnos and take this guy called Philoktetes nobody likes, cause he has Heracles' bow: then they leave him to rot for a while. Eldar: that was my spelling mistakes, tines not tioes and aiskros not aiskpos. Nevertheless, double-checking with that I seem to have got it now: (For) the generals threw him out shamefully and devastated him thus, and he is wasting away with a fierce disease. Still, he has the bow we need Fionavar's Holliday Wishes to all members of our online community: Happy Holidays Join the revelry at the Obsidian Plays channel:Obsidian Plays Remembering tarna, Phosphor, Metadigital, and Visceris. thepixiesrock Posted May 18, 2006 Posted May 18, 2006 I recently read the Iliad, and yeah, they leave the guy behing cause he is sick or something. Well, I didn't really read the Iliad, I read the Iliad in the Edith Hamilton book. It was like a fourth person perspective of it. Anyway, yeah, I remember them going back for the bow, and they shoot Paris with it. If my memory serves me correctly. Judge Hades Posted May 18, 2006 Posted May 18, 2006 Pixie read the Iliad? Shocking. Then again he ocul dbe just faking it and saw the movie "Troy." The problem I often have in translating a direct translation doesn't always work. One not only needs to translate the words that are bing said but the tone and meaning behind the words as well.
LoneWolf16 Posted May 18, 2006 Posted May 18, 2006 Mythology class, Pixies? Or Classical lit? I read that book by Hamilton too...and I'm with him on the assessment. I had thought that some of nature's journeymen had made men and not made them well, for they imitated humanity so abominably. - Book of Counted Sorrows 'Cause I won't know the man that kills me and I don't know these men I kill but we all wind up on the same side 'cause ain't none of us doin' god's will. - Everlast
Cantousent Posted May 18, 2006 Author Posted May 18, 2006 Okay, here's one of my favorite passages. I'll give you a hint: Socrates is the speaker. ικανὸν γάρ, οιμαι, εγὼ παρέχομαι τὸν μάρτυρα ως αληθη λέγω, τὴν πενίαν. thepixiesrock Posted May 18, 2006 Posted May 18, 2006 "Classical Mythology" I believe is the name of the class. Cantousent Posted May 18, 2006 Author Posted May 18, 2006 You had it right, Pixies, but that story is part of the Trojan War mythos. There are myths that predate Homer's [Homers'?] works that didn't make the cut.
