Synaesthesia Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 wtf is gangster rap? as in for those that have use the term what do they understand by it? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Bands like NWA, Public Enemy. Music/lyrics set in the the hood, the bad streets, subject matter that deals with drugs, drive bys, killing, whores, etc. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You've obviously never, ever listened to Public Enemy if you think they're gangsta rap.
Synaesthesia Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 I usually hate Greenday's type of music because it has no real purpose <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Music doesn't need purpose. Why would it? It's entertainment.
AlternaFurkle Posted February 7, 2006 Author Posted February 7, 2006 (edited) I'm sorry...you despise music with no meaning or purpose and yet you like manufactured girl groups from about ten years ago? Hmmm... You're right though, Green Day are sh!t. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> They may be manufactured, but their music still says something to me. Not only that, but half my friends haven't even heard of TLC! They're quick to buzz over crap like 50 Cent but don't stop to appreciate how rap is supposed to be done (R.I.P Lisa 'Left-eye' Lopes). <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Wait, you screw around over Green Day, but you like rap? I mean, Green Day is pretty bad, but rap isn't even music. Lyrics are not music. Especially if spoken, not sung. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> TLC are a rap/pop band (about as old as All Saints). They are the only type of rap that I like. It's hard to find any male rappers that don't rap about crap like "ZomG im in da club wit sum bacardi and nobody cares its yo b'day cus we jus getin drunk and stuf lol!!!1 (slight reference to 50 Cent there) I watched Shaznay Lewis in Bend It Like Beckham last night. She's OK as an actress (good enough for soaps, at least), yet I don't remember seeing her in anything else. Singing Daleks: an idea whose time has come. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> WTF! She was in Bend It Like Beckham? I gotta watch that movie again I usually hate Greenday's type of music because it has no real purpose <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Music doesn't need purpose. Why would it? It's entertainment. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> My taste is in music that has purpose. Edited February 7, 2006 by AlternaFurkle
thepixiesrock Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 Dude, you completely misinterpreted everything I said. I never said singing was neccesary. If it was, I wouldn't be a rabid Mogwai fan. I just said talking isn't music, and talking over a drum machine and a sample does not equel music, no matter how you try to spin my words. Because you said it isn't music? That's really the only reason you give as to why drums and talking isn't considered music. You see, rhythm is classified as music. Drum are an instrument, and a drum beat alone constitutes as music. Many countries in Africa and South America have music based on drums alone. And also, you are sying that if "Mogwai" wasn't classified as music, you wouldn't like it? I'm not twisting your words there, you said that. You said "If it was [neccesary], I wouldn't be a rabid Mogwai fan." It's not music, it's a poetry presentation with aural ambience, nothing more, nothing less. I still don't understand how anyone ever came up with the idea of classifying it as a genre. That people consider rap music doesn't change the fact that it isn't. I mean, there are still people out there who consider Hitler a good guy too. What people consider means diddley squat. They got the idea because it shows a few of the core elements needed to make music. Rhythm, and most of the time, there is a little jingle playing in the background. Because you hate rap so much, doesn't mean your bias opinion is fact. I hate rap. I loathe it. That doesn't mean it isn't music. If it were music, then street gangs would be considered as girly as The West Side Story. Because that's the kind of context in which gangs who use music goes. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hahahahahahahahahaha. Wow, you're an idiot. Ok, lets just go along with the whole "rap isn't music" thing here just for a second. Gangs aren't considered girly now listening to rap, how would they be considered girly if we called rap "music"? It is still the same thing, but now, since it is music, the rap makes the gang look girly. Do you see the problem with that? One thing you are either (a)forgetting or (b) didn't know, is that a lot of rap has a melody playing in the background. You are trying to argue with me when you seem to have a complete lack of understanding of (a)rap and (b)music.
