Manipulating balance

Apparently there's a device that affects your balance by sending electrical signals to the inner ear using a headset. You can get people to move in the direction you want because they feel that's the direction they need to go to maintain balance.

 

The game application thing seems fun.

If I'm not entirely mistaken, a similar device is used for people who have extreme inner ear problems, i.e no balance at all, the whole world appears shaky and blurry. Said device calibrates the balance of the person, allowing him/her to walk around as if nothing has ever happened for longer periods of time.

 

The procedure takes like 20 minutes to do and after that you'll be "cured".

I don't find the idea appealing. It also depends on the long term effects since having an inner ear infection can really screw you up.

What I find most disturbing is the fact when affected you "feel it is the right direction" .. that kinda screws with free will!

Same thing happens when your on a swaying bridge. Everyone will instinctively step in time with the sway. Thats why troops break step, because you end up setting up a harmonic disturbance that can bring the bridge down.

 

Even when your aware what is happening most people still can't overcome the need for balance

Your not being tricked by a person , but your body is being tricked into keeping it's balance because your not even aware of it.

 

I suppose your objection has to do with the puppet potential of the device?

yeah .. which is silly I guess .. it's just the small part of me that still believes in free will, which has a problem with the potential misuse of the device!

 

But tricking someone that way just seems to inhumane to me .. since you are messing with intuition, the need of balance etc ..

Not silly at all it definately has some applications which could be considered dubious.

Rumor has it these guys have been doing exactly the same thing for quite some time now, without the need for microelectronics or any of that crap.

I have a feeling that Rosbjerg isn't worried about people voluntarily putting themselves in this situation by playing an amusement park game.

 

Maybe (just maybe) he's worried about using this on people against their will. I mean, I realise what a truly wild interpretation of his words that is, but I think I might be on to something. "

but yeah, like the article points out, I'm more worried about the misuse of the technology .. based on the fact that the device creates a feeling of "need" to go in one direction, it's hard to argue with your intuition and need of balance, which will make the control of humans quite easy!
