I can only think of a few games that've used this setting (Outlaws, Desperados, Wanted!, RED DEAD REVOLVER)

I don't have a PS2 or an Xbox so it doesn't count.

*tsk tsk*

And you lot call yourselves western fans. How can you forget the legendary Freddy Pharkas Frontier Pharmacist? :D

I wouldn't say GTA: San Andreas is a RPG, but the weird thing is that I ended up playing it as one. There's the very linear main quest where you're just solving mission after mission until you end the game. But then there are lots and lots of 'side-quests' where you're free to do anything you want (basically) and take your time to focus on developing your character. I've spent a lot more than 100 hours in San Andreas (and I still have it installed and play it occasionally) and most of those hours have probably been me just zooming around the landscape, trying to find new things, solving side-quests or just doing stunts and stuff.

...I'm a sucker for celebrity cameos.

Are they a good thing, though? So long as there's enough money left in the budget to hire good voice actors to do the bulk of the dialogue, then maybe it's fine. However, the need to pay a fortune to get a big name on the front of the box is only going to drive production costs up, forcing publishers to insist on bland games to appeal to the masses, right?

It might work for certain types of games, but take a truly immersive RPG and have famous voices popping up here and there and it would just destroy the illusion. They'd have to be really good actors to make it work, and big name stars are not necessarily good actors.

I agree, the perfect balance imo is the experienced cartoon voice actors that were hired for the BG games and don't take up half the budget. I'm a movie junkie however and big names still draw me to a game so long as it doesn't suck. Like Sean Bean, Patrick Stewart and Terence Stamp in Oblivion, for example.

We now bring you live footage from the World Championship Staring Final.
