Help rpg newbie

I'm new to rpg games and I have a bit of a problem with character development. I finished the game first time using auto level up. But playing that way doesn't give the fullest experience because I think using auto level makes exile just an average dude. Well I did okay but I got an impression that there could be more.

 

I've read a few character development guides but they all focus on creating a character. But what do I do after that? If I develop for example a strength based ls jedi sentinel how do I continue sharing those attribute points? And what about the skills? Do I concentrate on couple of skills? Which are best skills for pc to have? Do I have to change development a lot if I play ds?

 

Lot of questions but I really appreciate if you can help me. Thanks already.

Every 4 levels you get 1 attribute point to spend how you like.

 

Auto leveling is a bit dumb cos you end up with fats and powers you dont want/use.

 

Spend the skill points however you like that is the beauty of role playing - customisation.

 

It doesnt really matter if you play LS or DS except that you get some class specific feats when you get your prestige class

Well, I'd start out by being a guardian, and adding weapon master later if you want. That will make your character more able to survive and win battles with minimal strategy. Strength and Dexterity should be your upgrade states, STR for hitting power and DEX for armor value. At first, focus on your persuade skill, and then awareness. Persuade will help you with conversations and awareness will spot those nasty mines and such.

 

As you play through with your "tank" character, take note of what you always want to do, but fail because of low skill, Repair? Computer? Security? Demolitions? Decide what you like most, and next time around, experiment with different skills. The real fun of an RPG is experimenting with different things, rather than having someone just tell you.

Don't make your char a jack of all trades, if he's good on strength, concentrate your points there.

 

A jedi concentrates on lightsaber combat so focus everything on that, pick only one of the attack moves and max it.

 

For skills, I'd say repair is one of the more important ones, computers and perception are good to have too.

 

Pick the force powers you want, just see to it that you max out whatever you learn. Master speed is good for everyone, so is master heal, also go for master battle meditation, destroy droid, stasis field and force wave, if you want a ranged weapon, learn throw lightsaber.

 

Don't try to spread out your characters attributes, the best ones are specialists, not generalists.

No.

Ok. But I guess it isn't clever to spend all the points on one attribute.. Next time I'm going to play ds next time and I want to use some of Force attacks so I need wisdom too. But how do I know how much points are enough to make them work (force drain, lightning, force scream are kind of cool and are said to be work pretty nicely)?

Actually, there is; you may only deduct points in an attribute down to a minimum of three (3), and any points you add to an attribute increment on a curve, so that after a point score of fourteen it requires two points (+2) to increase the attribute to fifteen, and three points (+3) to increase from sixteen to seventeen (equates to the bonus level of conferred by the attributre score).

 

In this way you are quite free to have a character at level 1 with 20 strength, but the character will necessarily have to be penalised in other areas.

 

For skills the maximum you may set is based on your current level, and increases with it. E.g. a level 10 character can only have a maximum of 10 in a single "core" skill and half that in any others.

 

For extra information, check out the "Skills" status screen (press "k"); you will see a description of all the skills and feats and powers (for Force-Senstives). In the descriptions there is a note explaining the fundamental attribute that governs the skill, e.g. Charisma governs Persuasion so your charisma bonus/penalty (e.g. +2 for attribute score 14 and -1 for attribute score 9) is added to your raw skill score.
