taks Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 allllllrighty then... in an attempt to justify a new upgrade to my computer, i convinced my su... er, wife that we needed to upgrade HER computer in order to do the things she'd like to do. in particular, i, er, she has a camcorder but no way to record the film to DVD. her current system is an old P3, 800 MHz job with only 128 MB of PC100 SDRAM. running XP is obviously out. long story short (filled mostly with obtuse rationalizations that convinced only me this upgrade is necessary... she just went a long for the ride), as a result, i decided the best option would be to give her my current system sans video card, provide a few upgrades to her as well, and then build a new system with the video card as a base (oh, i'm keeping the case, too...) so here it is: wife gets: 1800+ w/1.25 GB PC2700 DDR RAM running XP home on a epox EP8K5A2+ mobo, 3 HDDs with 60 GB, 15 GB and 7 GB respectively (i'm not going to JBOD them since it slows things down). the 7 GB job may go away since it isn't even UDMA 66. a new MX440 video card and a new samsung 16X TS-H552B DVD burner (both arrived today). she also gets a nifty antec case that's supposed to be real quiet and came with a 380 W tru-power supply (i have a 430 tru-power that i may swap out since she has the three drives, CD Rom and DVD burner all pumping). an older visiontek scanner that works quite well. a nice HP printer that's a few years old (i may take this for schoolwork and buy a new one for her, not in a hurry though). she'll also get my SB Live Value! sound card though i'm not sure it's any better than the realtek chip on-board... i get: Athlon 64 3200+ Winchester core (90 nm), ASUS A8V Deluxe mobo, OCZ EL platinum rev 2 dual channel memory (2X512MB), WD400JD Caviar 40 GB SATA HDD and an eVGA TI6800 video card (got this a few months ago when the 4600 shot craps). i'm still using the 19" "flat screen" viewsonic monitor (distortion problems on the edges) but it has great color and brightness for a trinitron clone. the new mobo has 8 channel sound so no more sound card for me, either. i can't wait to get home and start building... gotta figure out how to transfer all my data around, however. hmmm.... taks comrade taks... just because.
taks Posted December 23, 2004 Author Posted December 23, 2004 i figured that much... i have 7 or so to deal with. data strewn everywhere. more of a hassle than anything. mark comrade taks... just because.
