The Outer Worlds on the Microsoft Store - Win32 or UWP?

Recommended Posts

Microsoft recently announced that they plan to start supporting standard Win32 desktop applications on the Microsoft Store, and not just UWP applications.

Supporting Win32 Games on Windows 10

We want creators to be inspired to bring their best content to Windows 10, and we want Windows 10 to be the place where gamers come to discover their next favorite PC game. We recognize that Win32 is the app format that game developers love to use and gamers love to play, so we are excited to share that we will be enabling full support for native Win32 games to the Microsoft Store on Windows. This will unlock more options for developers and gamers alike, allowing for the customization and control they’ve come to expect from the open Windows gaming ecosystem.

So that raises the question, will the version of The Outer Worlds available on the Microsoft Store be a Win32 app? It would be easier for Obsidian to maintain the same version of the game on all stores, after all.

I hope so. Makes modding a million times easier

It is still a UE4 game.  Without some sort of built-in modding framework, it almost doesn't make a difference whether it is a UWP or WIN32 build.

The developers know that modding is something fans are asking for, but it's the kind of thing that might have to wait until TOW2 (or a late-stage DLC/update).  Don't bet on seeing mods anytime soon.

Hi there!

Thanks for reaching out to us and showing interest in The Outer Worlds! While we won't be UWP, we are not a Win32 app as we have to make use of the 64-bit OS. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Be incredible,
