I am playing as a Chanter on Path of the Damned difficulty, and trying to slaughter the caravan. But I get no exp from killing anyone, including the master or the merchant. Is this intended or a bug? And I can't get out of combat before wiping the last one of them, no matter how far I stay away. But I really want to loot their corpses, especially the merchant! Please help! Much appreciated!

Killing Kith does not grant XP. The only XP for killing things is for killing "monsters", which is limited to a certain number per type. 

 

There are very few ways to "leave combat" once it's started. Sometimes running away far enough will end it, but often you can be stuck until you find the enemy that is still aggressive, even if it's not chasing you down.

If you're trying to max out the most gold you can get from the introduction, you can sell everything you find to Heodan. He pays much, much more than any other vendor in the game, leaving you with a sizable windfall to start with. 

There is also a hidden item in the starting area called the Disapointer. It is around bottom left of the map where the abandoned tents are. You will need to go into scouting mode to see it.
