If using a ranged weapon, is the total added pen of this ability 5, or is it 3?

    It's +2 from the vanilla ability and +3 on top for the ranged upgrade. So +5 overall.

    Note that it seems to only work on the primary target (so won't help with mortar fire aoe for example).

    Didn't know that. Great info. For me it's a rather bad ability. I never take it. Also low PL bonus.
