No, you don't need to take him. He's a kind and polite young man though.

    In fact I've heard the "best" ending requires you to not recruit him. But as far as I've seen no ending is really bad

    I should warn you though, that if you don't recruit him and complete the DLC, it appears you can't recruit him afterwards.
